Aloha.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this and/or if someone knows how the process works?

We've got 310 points at OKW, and were using them every year until we moved to Hawaii.

If DVC would build a club at Disneyland we'd probably keep them, but the point structure for the hotel is out of line (like the hotels at WDW) and we did do a trip to Orlando in May, and it really was a pain, so we won't be doing that too often. (But we really do love staying at OKW.)

I'm curious if they make you sell all of your points, or if you could sell a portion, etc.

Any insight will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Nancy

In responding to another thread last night, I did go through the offering statement specifically looking in detail at the resale section.

The deal is that if you are selling a contract, you have to sell the entire contract - you cannot break it up. So, if you have a 310 point contract, you have to sell the whole thing. If the 310 points is over a number of contracts/add-ons, you can sell each contract individually. That was my reading of it. Take out your offering statement and jump to the back where the resale section is - it's not very long and the language is not filled with legalese.

Your reading is correct.

This is why when a newbie comes around and asks about buying 500 points, we tell them to buy them in seperate contracts. Contracts can not be broken and smaller contracts sell faster.

I bought a 230 point contract to start, then added 200 points. Today, I could sell either the 230 point contract or the 200 point add on. There is no way at all that I could sell 100 points from either contract, because contracts can not be broken up.

"Selling Points Back to Disney"

FYI - Disney does not buy back points directly. You have find a buyer or go through a resale agent. The only time they get points back is through the "first right of refusal" clause where they review every resale deal and have the right to buy it back at the negotiated price.

Aloha and thanks.

I appreciate the insights. We really had never thought we'd ever sell them, but the distance is a problem. And then we were thinking we'd like to keep part of them for family use, but it looks like we that's going to be a problem. All I can say right now is aaargh. But I do appreciate the help! :D

Everyone have a lovely day.

I can understand that living in Hawaii makes Orlando a difficult (and expensive with airfare trip). WE live in California. Yes, using points for rooms is "expensive" and probably not the best use of points, but think of the hotel rooms you CAN stay in! Many we would not stay in if we had to use cash!

Perhaps you could rent your points out for awhile if that helps? Of course, with the price increase, I'm sure that whatever you sell your points for now you may not be "making money", but you are probably breaking even....WITH trips to Orlando to boot!

That would be the way to go. Rent the points. It will take care or the annual fees. Then when you are ready to sell, sell it. Dues are under $4.00 per point. Asking is $10.00. Anywhere between you come out ahead.

Unless your stay in HI is expected to be a short one, you will likely be better off selling then repurchasing later when you can use it. Depending on your points availability, you should be able to get around $17K after commisions. A little more or less depending on specifics and which company you sell through or if you sell it yourself.

Aloha, and thanks again.

I've only used these boards a couple of times on the recommendation of a friend who visits it frequently. (Sitting out here on a rock in the Pacific Ocean makes me less of a Disney freak than I was, I guess.)

The members of this board are so helpful and pleasant. All of you are to be commended. It's a rare thing today to find message boards that aren't loaded with "flames" and the rest of the nonsense we all see.

The idea of just selling the contract may be a good one for us since we believe our move to Hawaii is permanent. But I think we'll try to rent the points and see how that goes. I posted last night and had a few inquiries today, but none of the requested dates were available.

For our own travels, the hotels that DVC does business with are quite nice, but I have HGVC for that. But maybe for a weekend getaway we'll try the "Concierge Collection" and see how that goes.

Regardless of what we do, I do feel our purchase at OKW was an excellent investment. When we bought they had a "bonus" of free park passes, which was just fabulous, and actually is what helped us make the decision. Living in Chicago, it was an easy trip to Orlando, the airfares were low, and it allowed us to get away from the "weather" for a while.

I've got to spend some time reading more of the posts on your board. I do really believe this is an extremely valuable source of information for everyone. Thank you all again.

Aloha,

Nancy
