Seems I've hit a stumbling block...

I was doing so good - sorting through things, tossing out stuff, only keeping papers that were really important, parting with a lot of my books ( I just LOOOOOVE books!), but today I started going through my Christmas stuff and I'm having a real hard time.. :(

Granted, I have FAR too many boxes of Christmas items - and there won't really be anywhere for me to have my own Christmas stuff when we move - but I just can't decide what to keep and what to get rid of.. Some of it is sentimental - some of it is stuff that I know can no longer be purchased anywhere - and some of it is just too darn cute!

So - how do I decide? Once again the "reality" of the situation is starting to sink back in again and I guess I'm just feeling kind of down.. I sure wish I was one of those people that didn't get "emotionally attached" to all of their stuff.........

You should have your daughter come by and sort through that stuff wtih you. She may have a special attachment to some of them, and I'm sure she'd love to keep the ones that you have sentimental feelings for if you tell her the stories behind them. I know one of the saddest days growing up was the year my dad realized that the box marked "ornaments" in the hall closet was actually the box that contained all of the broken ornaments, frizzy garland and other trash basically. The only conclusion we could draw was that the "trash" that got thrown out had all of the ornaments in it. I had a real attachment to some of those ornaments that my parents never could have guessed.

You should try to sell the ones you decide not to keep on ebay instead of just getting rid of them, though. There seems to be a pretty decent secondary market. The BEST time to sell is right around thanksgiving but you can probably still pick up some extra cash by selling now.

C.Ann, is there a women and children's shelter close to you? Many of those women had to leave everything behind when they left home. Maybe it would help you to give some of your things to them. Maybe it would help get over this stumbling block.

You know, I just gave myself an idea. I've got some stuff that I don't use, some that are pretty new. We have a "store" in my town that all the benefits go to the shelters, and the families.

C.Ann, why don't you have your daughter help you? She can take some of the stuff she really loves and you can take some of the stuff that you really ove. Do you have friends or relatives you are close to? Perhaps the rest can be given to them, as sort of an "heirloom" type ting?

When my Din-laws died, we had to break up their home, and you would be shocked at some of the things people thought of as heirlooms! Not necessarily the usual stuff(jewelry, crystal, china), but things such as the spaghetti pot, my FIL's favorite golf shirt etc.

I've already thought about eBay, but if I'm going to try to sell this stuff, I'm going to have to do it now.. Unfortunately, my DD is somewhat of a "pack rat" too - so- even though my son-in-law said he didn't mind storing some of our stuff in the attic of the new house, by the time he gets all of their own stuff up there I doubt there's going to be much room left..

Somehow I just HAVE to decide what is the absolutely MOST important - and then just part with the rest.. Too bad I didn't have the nerve to just start donating boxes of stuff without even looking in them.. This is TOO hard..

I don't suppose getting drunk and having a pitching party would be a solution would it?

Setting a date for next weekend or so. Calling the neighbors over to have a "take it'" party.

That would impose a dead line for you to get only the stuff you want out of the way, and the rest, is fair game.

How about a yard sell . That good way to get rid of stuff to.
