Seeing AP Room Discounts before you buy the AP?

I don't currently have an AP, but I am considering upgrading my 9 day ticket to an AP for our upcoming trip if I can get a little closer to breaking even. We already have rack rate room-only reservations, but I would love to see what kind of discount I could get with an AP. But as far as I can tell, the Disney site does not allow you to search AP room discounts without logging in to prove you already have one. I'd like to know what the discounts available are before I decide to upgrade! What can I do? Would they tell me over the phone if I called?

Thank you! I asked this question on the Disney site chat window and the person helping me was less than helpful... She basically said the only way to know what AP discounts are available is to have an AP. haha!

You are correct that you can't view AP rates online unless you have a current AP, but you can call and check availability/rates. If there is a discount available for what you have booked, you can have it applied to your existing reservation. If you do get a discount and are asked to show your AP at check in, just tell the CM you are upgrading tickets and you should be able to return within 24 hours to show your active AP. Good luck :).

Just a suggestion?

Wife and I hold current APs, and are DVC owners, All about 8 years.

BUY the AP for PARK ADMISSION discounts. AP holders have not been offered any REAL room discounts for about 6 years, and always after the General Public. By which time, most everything has been picked clean.

This is why we bought into DVC. And we LOVE it :). No more "discount games".... we did this for YEARS, and they used to work. Not so much, anymore.

All personal opinion - I'm not necessarily right, no one else is necessarily wrong.

Been AP for years and agree the AP room discount has been much harder to get. Used to be we saved enough to completely pay for one pass. My last couple onsite stays were via General Public discount because it came first ... and once AP came out there was no availability for my resort. Last two trips offsite and next trip is booked offsite.

The AP discount (forget room) will get you free theme park parking so staying offsite becomes more attractive, shopping discounts (even for sodas if you buy in shops), dining discounts, special events (land preview and postviews) ............ and bottom line if you can make the ticket at least break even on park days the rest of the days and discounts are all money in your pocket.

OF COURSE, with an AP you will feel compelled to go more often.

To the OP, since they won't know, do not believe this. It is vastly incorrect.
AP Holders get, on avg, 10% more than the General Public discounts. Sometimes they are much more (like this Sept AP discounts at most Deluxe resorts are about 40% off, total). Rarely are they less than 10% more. And I've yet to find less availability than the GP room inventory. Usually, I find more rooms when I change the discount option. I've gone about every 6 weeks, for the past few years and if there was a discount offered for the dates, always found the AP rates lower and always found AP rooms. The only time I didn't use the AP, or any, discount was NYE. There are no discounts then. Now, maybe others will only stay at 1 resort or something. We aren't like that. We'll stay at most any Mod or Deluxe (just no Values) so there's always a room at one of them at a discount.
DVC is incredibly expensive, unless you NEED the larger rooms. If you do, then it's a great deal. If you are like us and prefer and like, full service hotels and smaller rooms, and will never, ever cook a single time, DVC is much more expensive way to go. I know, we priced it out.
Just wanted to make sure you got some good info
OP - you can always ask around here and someone is usually nice enough to search and tell you what we see.
Second this. There's almost always someone around that will check the rates for you

We are planning a trip next December 2019, early in the month to see Disney at Christmas. We are hoping to stay club level at the GF-either RPC or SL. I would consider buying an AP for one of us if there is a good enough room discount and then fitting our next trip within the year to make the ticket worth it. Are these rooms typically discounted at an AP rate?

Yes, I have booked those rooms with an AP discount in the past and they are currently available with the most recent discounts. That said, the current discount ends 10/8 so as always, there are no guarantees about what Disney will do with the next round. While I always say never assume, I do assume (see what I did there ;) ) they will continue the similar pattern they've been following. There's been no reason to think they'll be stopping or altering the resorts/rooms included with discounts.
