Security Negotiations

Sharing this article that I came across last night about DLR negotiations with the security union.

I'm not making a statement one way or the other; I'm just sharing the information. These situations tend to always work out without a strike, but it is notable that Disney is taking the time to train contractor replacements.

Negotiations resume on May 7th. This is something to keep an eye on if you are traveling this month, but most likely the parties will reach an amicable resolution, and there will be no impact on the park experience.

Edited to add: Article is hyperlinked to "this article" at the beginning of this post. Posting here to avoid further confusion. https://www.micechat.com/435708-disneyland-news-security-strike/

I'm normally very much on the side of the works and think they should get paid more

But when I hear this has extra stresses, then why not take some of those away by having a scanning system so Security doesn't have to search every bag?

Like I get it the job has more then that but at least those doing that job should just have to stand around and only search people that a scanner tells you might have something they are not suppose to, instead of putting your hands on my stuff every time I go in

I support them getting more money (Disney has raised prices on merch, food and tickets within the last year) but also I think some of the systems should change to make it easier for staff

Basically why don't they have WDW's system? Tis indeed a multi-million dollar question! One that many of us have had and for which we have not found a real answer. Rumors include: there isn't enough space, the scanners don't actually work, union is blocking them because it would decrease the amount of personnel needed. Layer on top of the rumors the fact that Disneyland briefly tested the WDW style scanners during Covid and you just still end up with more questions.

From the linked article, this is interesting:

Complicating matters is the officers’ growing distrust of not just their employer, but also of their local executive board (Local 1955) and the parent union, the Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA).

For the contract votes, the union are requiring in-person voting, eliminating absentee ballots (which they claim are for elections only) and online voting (which drew record participation—1,100 members—when last used). The union refused to send out the full contract for members to review, disseminating only a three-page summary, and had just one copy of the full contract on hand to be read at the polling site.

“Our international union doesn’t seem to be helping and even appears to be trying to make it fail,” noted another cast member. “It’s got everyone (furious).”

The previous local union president was suspended by the parent union after reportedly posting updates on the status of negotiations, Disney’s demands, and the union’s counteroffers. His replacement has come under attack by union members for seeming to favor Disney’s interests over theirs, and for refusing to answer emails and calls.
Based on history, a strike seems unlikely. Perhaps most importantly, that’s because the union has no strike fund. Many members can’t afford to miss a paycheck—and Disney knows it.

I mean even just use Universal system from Hollywood. You put your bag into a machine and only if they see something weird they pull you over

Even if 50% of people still had to get check (which I doubt it would be that high) it would save time, make the process quicker and make work less stressful for them

Its hard to know because like you said its all rumors....the space should not be an issue. The two reasons I could see is unions (because if they allow this its harder to make more money) and or Disney doesn't want to invest the money but Disney seems to be pretty fine with investing in new tech for the turnstiles...so feels like its not that either

@JerrodDragon89 where are you reading about stress? I saw a comment about increased risk but I assumed that came from altercations.

I looked it over and the risk for part is what I was talking about

Which once again, less risk if you just have to mostly scan bags over searching each one

Though I will say what makes this whole thing harder to talk about is Security isn't just that, most the other duties not much more you can do about Risk but the the bag checkers are where I see a way to make the job simpler

I was at Disneyland Paris a few weeks ago and they were using airport type scanners that everyone sent their bag through. So much easier than the frustrating random bag pulls at the US parks.

Disneyland in California doesn't have random bag pulls like WDW. Disneyland searches every bag.

This is 100% my guess. I got into a conversation once with one of the security guards and he tried to sell me on how much better the hand check was and how too much got through otherwise. When I asked him whether it was actually a union issue, he was tellingly angry.

I don't doubt things get through but two years ago some high schools snuck in things for grad night...so no system is perfect. Just from context clues...feels like it has to do with the people working it not wanting to change for whatever reasons but as a guest I just want it to be quicker and someone not to take all my stuff out of my bag just for me to have to put it back in as i go to the busses

That looks like it is from 2024. Fantamsic re-opened on May 24, 2024. And don't grad night participants go through separate screening lines?
Yep two years ago and maybe but its still DIsney security people checking them and because something slipped in that Disney noticed it causes for a little while longer lines because they started to check bags more

My point is no system will be perfect but also I see people with selfie sticks and Huge Tri pods that aren't suppose to be let in all the time, and I know those aren't dangerous but it just goes to show that something new could work, just something that moves the lines faster
