I know there are some people on the DIS that live in or around Seaside, Florida and I just have some questions. It was just featured on a Travel Channel show about Florida and it is GORGEOUS!!!!! As soon as I saw it I also remember it being the town where The Truman Show was filmed. How is it to actually live there? It seems like it would be stepping into the past. One church, one school, everyone probably knows everyone, I only recognized one name in the list of restaurants, shops, etc... (Wachovia :rotfl: ) Are there any malls, shopping areas, well known restaurants, airports close by? I wouldn't mind living somewhere like that if I knew modern amenities were close by, but I know some people really dig that small town lifestyle (my mom for example.) The beauty is just astounding, and it looks (from the town map) like there is a lot of undeveloped land. I also really liked how all the homes had catchy vacation home names! I just moved to SC so I'm not looking to move. I just wanted to get some insight into this type of town and what people felt about it.

Thanks

Seaside is about half way between Destin and Panama City Beach. So if you are familiar with either of those two areas then you can decide if it's "remote".

I have not been to Seaside in many, many years, way before it started to become developed so back then it was remote and a long drive to a grocery store. Hopefully this "bump" up will get you some more response.

I always wanted to go to Seaside Florida as I have been to Seaside New Jersey and Seaside Oregon. Then about 5 years ago our family went to Mardi Gras and we drove along the Panhandle so we could stop there. We first stayed at Ft. Walton Beach then made our way to Seaside. Its absolutely beautiful. I think they filmed the movie "The Truman show" there with Jim Carrey. The pastel colors reminded me of the Islands. It seemed like everyone was relaxed (well I live In New York) The sand was a beautiful color and the water was so blue. We stayed in the area for a few days and I really would love to go back. I think Seaside would be a great place to retire to (that or Islamorada Florida in the Keys) The architecture of each building was really nice too, everything was so clean, I can't wait to go back.

Not really very familiar with either of those. I mean I know where they are, but I've never been there. I just wondered how remote Seaside is now. I tried to pull up a map of the area on Mapquest and it can't even locate the town. It's making me think of the Stepford Wives :rotfl:

Try Seagrove Beach, FL. Seaside wasn't even on my FL map. I think it is actually Seagrove and perhaps the home community is called Seaside? I remember getting the obligitory souvie shirts and they said "Seagrove" way back when.

Yep, that worked and it looks to be the right place. Halfway between Destin and Panama City. I get so interested in Travel things that when I see something about a new place I want to know all about it! (Where is that little nerd smiley when you need it? :rotfl: )

I lived about 30 minutes from there until this summer. It is not what I would call remote at all! It is a gorgeous planned community. The housing there has skyrocketed and it is ridiculous! They area there is quite developed and on its way to being overdeveloped in the near future. The whole panhandle area went from quiet and sleepy to this big crazy boom in the last few years. It would be awesome to live there, the beaches are the best. There are airports in Panama City and Fort Walton Beach, outlet malls, Walmart etc within 30 minutes. It is really really pricy though.

I just looked around the internet a little and noticed the CRAZY house prices! You're right! I thought some of the places I had lived were nuts, but whoa. I guess you're paying for the beauty. Seems like God should get some of the profits, huh? :rotfl: Anyway, it seems fairly remote compared to places I have lived. Here are some of the things I looked up. I think I'd love to visit there!

Distance to the closest:
McDonalds 11 miles
Burger King 11 miles
Starbucks 5 miles (I was glad to see this one was close :) )
WalMart 16 miles
Grocery Stores 10+ miles
Gas Stations 10+ miles
Target 30+ miles :earseek:

I visited Seaside, Florida many years ago and while it was a beautiful place, I'm not sure if I would want to live there. I remember reading that each house had to have a white picket fence, yet the fence design had to be completely original, i.e, it could not be the same as anyone else's. I wonder if there are any other restrictions that are imposed on the home owners. There are so many deed restrictions in housing communities all over the state, I would imagine that Seaside would be equally tough if not more so to keep it's beautiful appearance.
