SD Zoo - what day of the week?

Current hopeful plan is to arrive Sunday 5/11 noonish, depart Saturday 2:00ish (either out of SNA or LAX - hoping for SNA) - probably staying at GCH or DLH. We're considering going to the SD zoo one day since we've been to DL 4 times and have never done anything else in SoCAL besides DL, but we don't know which day to try the zoo.

Any thoughts/advice? Does it make sense to try to stay in SD at the beginning or end of the trip for one night around the zoo or just travel from DLR to SD the day we go to the zoo and only deal with one hotel?

Any day during the week is a good time to go to the SD zoo. The drive isn't terrible if you time it right, so it might just be easier to stay in one hotel at DL.
