We are going to San Diego in August. But I am looking for a reasonably priced hotel on Mission Bay ... would love to be able to walk to water sports (kayaking and jet skiing) any suggestions? Or would LaJolia be better? Or anohter area? We are also going to Sea Worls and the Zoo. I am very concerned picking a place and it not being located at the water (ie have a highway inbetween and still have to drive) I also don't want to be in a dive motel for a week.
Or are we better off downtown and driving anyway?
Thank you!!

My recommendations for hotels on the water in Mission Bay are first the Hyatt Mission Bay, and second the Bahia Resort. I've stayed in both and like them--Bahia is single and some 2-story, while the Hyatt is a high rise, but rooms have stunning sunset views over the bay, the Pacifc and Mission Beach. Great pool area and water slides too!

That said, I am partial to La Jolla. I lived there for 3 years- it is just stunning. However, there are not hotels there "on the water". La Jolla is really up in the hills and has many boutique hotels and fabulous restaurants overlooking the Pacific and the bluffs. It is about a 15 minute drive from Mission Bay, so if you decide to stay in MB, you should definitely drive out to La Jolla at least one day for great shopping and stunning views from great restaurants, many of them open air.

Lastly, Coronado Island is also amazing. It is about 20 mins from MB. The Hotel del Coronado is the most famous hotel in SD. It is truly amazing, has wonderful beachfront restaurants, and just a 5 min walk to a charming town.

I see you are new so you cant send/receive private messages yet, but after you have posted 10 times, you can do them. I would be happy to help you with further detail if you want to send me a private message later on.

We are making our first trip to San Diego for Labor Day and we picked the Pacific Terrace hotel for our first stay. It got wonderful reviews and like you, I really wanted to be right on the water. From what I know, it is on Pacific Beach, located between Mission Beach and La Jolla so seems like a great location! We booked an ocean-view and it also offers complimentary breakfast and complimentary glass of wine on the first night!!! I'm so excited to check it out!
