This is something I am constantly considering as a hobby. Can you tell me what are the must-haves to purchase before I get started?

all you REALLY need to get started is paper, pictures, and adhesives. From there you can get embellishments for your pages.

I would suggest a paper cutter with ruler (invaluable for cropping pictures or cutting paper backgrounds for photos), a set of alphabet stamps, photo stickers for fixing your pics to the page, or some of the "rolling" adhesive (not sure how to describe...). I also have paper punches in different shapes to punch out small squares, circles, etc which I then use to stamp letters onto each shape to make headings, titles..., also lots of fun stickers!

I like to scrapbook, but I am terribly negligent! I am now working on finishing the book for our Disney World 2006 trip before we go again in June!!:rotfl:

When I started I bought a paper cutter, good pair of scissors (which I hide from the kids), rolling adhesive, a set of journeling markers (6 in the set) and a bunch of paper (both plain and decorative). Since then I've also bought various punches, buttons, ribbon, stickers, tags, circle cutter, various stamps, and more and more paper!

I started with paper, paper trimmer, 2 punches, some ink, and about 3 stamp sets.

What I should have started with was: paper, paper trimmer, a xyron (sticker maker for the stuff that's too small to use regular adhesive on), and adhesive. I only buy stickers for what I need.

First thing to get is an idea of what you like- bright pages with shiny stickers? subdued paper with matching contrast papers? lots of 3D items like brads and crochet flowers? prepackaged embelishments or ones you make yourself? Not that you can't do all of the above, LOL

The best thing to happen to my scrapbook started with a Stampin' Up party my neighbor had. We started a monthly club and I've been learning great techniques as well as having their idea book and purchasing the products I need. I'd see if there is a SU, Creative Memories, or other similar consultant in your area.

I'd start with:
-Solid paper in a family of colors
-corresponding printed paper
-matching ink and/or black or brown Stazon that you can watercolor into and "clear" Versamark that you can make backgrounds with and tint with chalk and/or paint markers that you can use as stamp ink until you expand your supplies
-adhesive- stick glue and roller sticky tape
-stamp sets that go with your paper theme or themes in your pictures- look for focal stamps (ex: a cupcake) and also background stamps (ex: polka dots)
-calligraphy tip markers- they make even my writing pretty
-a rotary paper cutter and compatible straight and decorative blades.

I find scrapbooking very enjoyable, but it can be expensive!!
I usually buy the background paper and use a sheet on one side and then go plain white on the other side. I try to coordinate the two facing pages, so they look like they match, even if I'm only using the one nice sheet of paper. I keep all our cards (christmas, birthdays, etc.) and then cut and paste with those. I have a pretty large collection of cards now, so I can grab pics of snowmen, easter eggs, flowers, etc. and the cards sometimes have nice poems or sayings that you can incorporate.

IMO the most important thing while scrapbooking is to have a designated spot to keep all of your scrapping supplies! I like to keep my supplies in see- through plastic folders that look like manilla folders. I used to have tons of stickers, but now I have moved onto die-cuts. I go to a scrapbook store and pay $5 and I can stay as long as I like and die-cut all sorts of images and letters. This is way cheaper than stickers!

Come on over to the Creative Community as we have a whole board just for scrap booking! :thumbsup2

I agree that it can be a very expensive hobby, but very enjoyable too. I only wish I had more time to devote to it. When I first started I stuck with lots of different paper, a glue stick and some stencils. From there it escalated to stickers, die cuts, stamps, foil, fabrics and fibers...its really endless to what you can use. I really like the Cricut Expression machine to make the die cuts. That was a pricey investment, but comes in very handy for all sorts of different projects. Start small and then as you become more into it you can expand your tools.

Go to the scrapbooking section on the disboards as per pp.

You can also waste a lot of money and time if you do not know what you are doing. I agree that you should join a club or go to a party/workshop for beginners.

I love sb and was so glad my SIL got me in the right direction with creative memory stuff ... now she bought a cricut to add to the fun!

Two of my sisters got me into scrapbooking via Creative Memories...now, 8 years later we all are still doing it and we all bought the cricut as well...it is definitely an addictive hobby!! :rotfl2:

Go to every store in town. Give them your CC or first born. Buy one of everything and you will have a good start.:rotfl:

I think you need the following must haves

Adhesives
Paper Trimmer
Scissors
Album
Cardstock

Another thing I think for a beginner would be an Idea Book to give your ideas of what to put on the page. I can think of two must haves
Becky Higgins - Sketches (this helps you with different types of layouts)
Becky Higgins - My creative companion (Gives you great ideas for borders, layouts, matting techniques, etc...) You can pick these up pretty cheap from ebay.

Happy Scrappin,
Clea

Once you get started, everything is going to be come a must have. My dh says that I have just started scrapbooking as an excuse shop. I dont need any excuses. :)

Scrapbooking is EXPENSIVE! But here are a few tips to start you out so that you don't waste money.
-Take your pictures to the store with you to buy paper. Only buy 2-3 sheets of coordinating paper for each layout of 3-5 pictures. This not only saves you money but space from storing paper that your not using.
-Don't buy paper packs. You'll spend forever trying to find pictures that look good on that awefull purple gingham paper that came in the pack just to realize that it wasn't that good of a deal if you never use half of the paper.
-Use photo adhesive squares to stick on just about everything. They come 750 for about 7 dollars and last forever. These squares and a fine glue pen is all you need.
-If you like your handwriting, buy just a few journaling markers in like black, blue, white, basic colors. If you buy more colors, you'll find you only use them once or twice. If you don't like your handwriting, journal on the computer and print it out. Don't waste money on markers that will just dry out.
-MAKE SURE EVERYTHING YOU BUY IS ARCHIVAL SAFE! Or your time-well-spent hobby will look like mush in a short amount of time. This means stay away from GLUESTICKS, make sure it says that it is for scrapbooking before touching your pictures.
-Creative Keepsakes.com has what they call "sketches" that show you basic layouts. I found this very helpful when I started.
-BRADS, you can do a lot with those little guys and they are cheap. They are those things that you poke through the paper and then bend to each side. You probably made a pinwheel out of one when you where a kid. You can put them in the corners to frame a picture, etc.
-Quotes are great, cheap embellishments. Use markers or print them on the computer.
-QVC has great shows on supplies. Check them out. They usually are kits that have everything in them and they are at a great price.
*I hope this helps. Have fun scrappin.
