Before our trip on 4/30, I had posted about wanting to take the Autotrain and my DH's flat out refusal to do so.

Well, thanks to the kids, we are taking it in February. Round trip!! :rotfl:

We stayed in SC again on the way home. On wednesday morning, as we started the second leg of the drive home, DH says, "We are SO taking the train next trip!!"

Hooray!!! :cheer2:

Now we can make more of our first and last days since he won't be a mess. Besides, the kids will be happier too.

I already got him and my mom on board to go back in Feb. My cousin is making the ressie as I type!! Yeah baby!!! :woohoo:

Congratulations on your Feb trip. We use the AutoTrain often. DH will no longer drive to FL. (its just too much traffic, what if something happens to the car, there are too many "wackos on the road, etc....) and I am not overly fond of flying, so it's the AutoTrain for us.

I am also near both of you, in NY, may I ask where you take the autotrain out of?

The Auto Train only runs between Lorton, VA and Sanford, FL with no other stops for passengers. A lot of people from NJ, PA, NY, drive down and catch the train in Lorton.

Another 1st time autotrain traveller here. I love trains and DH hates to fly and agrees that many "wackos" are on the road! LOL! We will be driving down leisurely, if there is such a thing, in January in order to make some sight-seeing stops and then taking the autotrain one-way back from Sanford to Lorton after Disney. We always hated that looooooong drive back. This way even the journey home will be an adventure!

We took it last Nov (DH and myself) and will be taking it again this Nov to get to our cruise. We really enjoyed it and went coach last time and have roomette's this time. As someone once said, "trains are the only civilized way to travel".

Anyone know why there is autotrain car carriers along the I-95. When I am driving from DE to Philly, I see them on my left and on the way back they are on my right. I was thinking maybe to transport new cars. Anyone have a clue :confused3 ?

Dsnycrzy: Are you seeing open car carriers or enclosed carriers. The ones used on the Auto Train are enclosed "boxcar" type cars. You cannot see the cars that are loaded on the train. The Auto Train only travels from Lorton VA to Sanford FL. The only reason the enclosed cars may be on your route may be that they are down for repairs or are just being "stored" there. Don't know that for a fact, just conjecture.

I am so excited for you....you will love the Autotrain!!!!
We board Nov. 24th :cool1: ....then cruise Nov. 26-30 :sunny: .....then WDW Nov. 30-Dec. 3  ...then back on the Train :guilty: !!!!

Okay, now I have a question for all the PA and NY Autotrainers. How do you go to Lorton?? We will be going on 2/5 and here in Buffalo, that can mean SNOW (although not this year).

AAA routes us to go over to Mt. Morris and head down 15 through PA....but I have been on that route with my parents when we used to go to Williamsburg every year and I am thinking it would not be fun in any kind of icky weather.

So.....any suggestions on the best route??? We do have an Expedition, so I am probably just being a baby here. And we will be traveling during the day....15 is so dark at night.

I also hate the beltway, but from what I can see we HAVE to get on it to get into Lorton. :confused3
