My brother had quite the motorcycle accident a month ago and will be in a cast on vacation this year. He will have been out of the external fixator for less than a week when we are at Disney, so I'm not optimistic about his ability to walk too far. Downtown Disney is a tradition on our family vacations and he really wants to come along to get a little Disney vibe since at this point he isn't planning on visiting the parks with us. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Wheelchairs can be rented at Downtown Disney. They have a very limited number of ECVs (motorized mobility scooters) for rent.
You can find complete information in post 2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread - there is a link to that thread in my signature.

I don't know where you are staying, but if he will be with you for several days, he may be better off renting from one of the off-site rental places. They will deliver and pick up from WDW area resorts. There is more information about renting from offsite in post 2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

Thank you so much for responding and for mentioning the disabilities thread. I had not thought of renting offsite. That might be a better idea, particularly since we are so unsure of how much he will be able to walk.

stayed at saratoga over mother's day week, just asked at front desk about where we could rent a wheel chair, they had one we could sign out for length of stay

Most of the resorts do have wheelchairs available, but with a couple of 'ifs', based on DIS poster's experience.

1) if they have any - sometimes they don't because they are all lent out. They are first come, first serve and can't be reserved ahead of time. The Disney website actually says they have wheelchairs for rent, so at any point, they could start charging.

2) if it is the right size - some posters have said that the only available wheelchair was not the right size for them; either an extra wide when they needed a regular one or regular when they needed an extra wide. Some were not able to get a replacement and for others it could take hours or days to get a correct size.

3) if it is in good condition. Quite a few DIS posters over the years have posted that the wheelchair from their resort was not in the best of shape.
