Scooter without a key start, what to do to secure it at the parks.

I'm very interested in getting a scooter that has a push button start. In other words it's keyless. I like everything else about this scooter except for not having a key start. It's one of the lightest weight scooters out there which for us is the greatest feature.

The store seller says some people take out the lithium battery which weighs 4 pounds when going on rides and such. That seems to be a little awkward and I can see wearing out the connector points doing this practice. Also, you could lose it on a ride or it could fall off the ride or you could forget it on a ride. Besides a battery only costs $400 and the scooter is $2000. So, you could still take the scooter and get a new battery and save $1600. It's light enough to wheel around if you had to do it.

I thought of a bicycle lock. But then, you probably have to leave the scooter outside the ride and find a place to lock it like a light post or equivalent. I get concerned Disney will not be happy with me doing this either. It might be a tripping hazard or be in someone's way.

I've been on enough rides to know that parking it by the start of the ride doesn't have posts to lock it up. Soarin' is a perfect example.

I am mistrustful; so, I would like a solution. Another problem is my husband's diabetic supplies would be in the scooter basket. I suppose we could have a backpack to hold his supplies and the battery but that sure doesn't seem like a practical answer.

I'm thinking the bike lock is my only answer even though it's not the best answer.

Does anyone else have any ideas? Has anyone travelled with a keyless scooter? Did you just trust the situation that nothing bad would happen?

no Disney dose not let you lock your things to anything I I have seen CM with boult cutter cutting them before )

I think @mamabunny disconnect her battery enough that it will not work but the every day person will have no idea you could to something similar

Would not leave anythings in the ECV/ scooter and they can walk away easer a backpack that you take with you would be much better. also you could think about getting one of these Tiles that you can hid some where on your ECV

I will be in the same position. Planning on getting the Atto Scooter that folds into a rolling suitcase and it also has no key. I’m planning on just taking out the battery if I have to leave it out of sight, but also put a tracker on it.

You can't use a bicycle lock. Scooter is light enough to steel without turning it on. Buying a replacement battery isn't that expensive.

I agree with PP consider just disconnecting the battery and put a tracker on the scooter. Could be as simple as a cheap cell phone and use a find my phone app.

I like the tracker idea. Loosening the connection enough not to work is a good idea, too.

Keep the ideas coming. Thank-you.

Go to Amazon and search for “Trackers” and “ Remote Alarms”. Tons of great products that you can mount onto the scooter. There are even a few that just look like bicycle lights/reflectors that have alarms on them. One tracker even said that you can hear the environmental sounds around the device with your phone while tracking it (so like hear the thieves talking while they are stealing your stuff). I’m probably going to go with a small tracker, then a small remote alarm that I could activate in case someone takes off with it. Also, I’ll probably insure my scooter since it’s so $$$.

Most attractions allow guests to ride the scooter right up to the boarding point, then move it to the exit. While CMs aren't responsible for guest belongings, I can't see many, if any, other people attempting to take someone else's medical equipment in view of Fast Members.

You could lock it to itself, but then the CMs wouldn't be able to move it.

It would be the same if you took the battery or disconnected it, too.
Fortunately, these scooters may be light enough to carry.

We will avoid rides where the scooters have to be moved by cast members.

We don't leave anything on the scooter if we are leaving it unattended. I have a small backpack that I use as my park bag and everything I need, including medical supplies, live in it. It goes with me onto rides. Sits nicely in the front basket when I am riding the scooter.

I would not trust leaving things with the scooter. They may end up being fine. But people steal things. Squirrels and other creatures go hunting through your belongings for food [and are craft enough that you will never know].

Is there an issue at WDW involving stolen scooters?
No, there's no issue that I know of. Most scooters are larger and heavier and need a key to operate. No one wants or tries to take those kinds of scooters. Some people are buying lightweight scooters now and they are easier to take if someone wanted to do so. Not having a key to start makes it more attractive to take, as well.

For the scooter thst have keys one key can fit multiple scooter and keys are very cheep if someone at Disney wanted to steal a scooter they could just buy a few different type scooter key on line. The best way to not have your scooter stolen ( and it is more likely a CM will move it ) is too not make it look worth stealing do not leave things in the scooter disconnect the battery hide a tracking device on the scooter. But my guess is that it will be with you most of the time even when your on rides and you have to leave it be hind most of the time it is not out in the open but only around people just getting off the ride and most of the time a CM is close by now they might not know this scooter is yours but other guest may not know

I agree with @gap2368 and the others here:

- don't leave anything of value unattended on your scooter (or wheelchair, walker, stroller, etc.)
- do put a Tile (or similar GPS tracking device) on your scooter
- do write down the model name/number AND especially the serial number in case it is stolen, you will need that info (but it won't be stolen 🙂 Please, don't worry, @Bete!)
- and do consider either disconnecting or "popping" the battery/connection just enough that it won't run (nothing will stop a thief faster than a non-functioning scooter LOL)

I truly don't worry about anyone taking my personal device - at WDW. Anywhere else, (state fair, zoo, other theme parks) yes, I take precautions. But at WDW? No.

For one thing, the price of entry at the Parks gates is high enough that your average thief/pickpocket isn't going to pay-to-play. They are far more likely to strike at the Resorts, where they can show up, claim to be visiting a friend (or make an ADR at the Deluxes) and then go "shopping" for doors left ajar, and those folks who insist on parking their scooters out in the hall/breezeways.

Same at Disney Springs - I'm far more cautious there than I am at the Parks.

I have always felt relatively confident that if there was an ongoing issue with scooter/mobility device theft at WDW, we would hear about it here. And we just don't. I think in all the years I have been hanging out here (and I was a lurker long before I signed up for an account - I wanted to check y'all out! LOL) I remember *one* instance of "theft" - and that was famously the time that another Guest took someone else's scooter because it was the same rental model. If I recall correctly, they got it straightened out with the vendor, and it all ended well.

And that's it.

Now I have heard a few (still, considering how many people attend WDW every year, one could say "very very few") stories of high-end stroller theft; most famously there was one a couple of years ago that made national news, primarily because the thief had apparently made a habit of stealing strollers at WDW and Uni.

But I really believe it will be OK. Take some *reasonable* precautions - and take your things when you leave your scooter - and it will be OK. 🙂

I have calmed down about it. All your suggestions have been wonderful. Thank you all.

It is so easer to get in the what if but if you really think about how many ECV and such are at Disney and the only one we have heard of was a mistaken identity I will say you have a very good chance of nothing happing ( I would still take a few percussions ) but I would not worry too much. I am sure if something did happen Disney would help you out as I am sure if some one were to steel then Disney would want them Caught Just as much as you would ( can you imagine one post here on Facebook or where every my mobility device got stolen at Disney and how big that would be. Any ways get the mobility device that works best for you use common sense after all your not going to leave a couple hundred dollars in plane view in your car or your keys in the ignition so why do this to your scooter ( I know it is keyless) take the precautions and enjoy your vacation

I wouldn't worry about locations where a CM moves your scooter to the where you exit the attraction. I might worry, at least a little, leaving the scooter unattended while I dined at a table service restaurant. Some people need the scooter at WDW, due to long distances, but can walk from the restaurant entrance to their table. I would bring the scooter inside.
