I understand that the scooter rentals at MK are first come first serve. Does anyone know how hard it may be to rent a scooter if you arrive at rope drop?

At rope drop, it ordinarily is not a problem to rent a scooter.

Remember that if you have a Park Hopper, you can "hop" your ECV rental to another park as well - although again there is no guarantee that they will have a scooter available when you arrive at any subsequent park.

You shouldn't have any trouble. It's later in the afternoon that there are problems, not usually first thing in the morning.

Rope drop should not be an issue even during busy times.
By an hour after rope drop during busy times might be an issue though.

We spoke to a cast member states the MZ scooter rental on Thursday. She said they run out of scooters everyday within two hours of opening. Then, they go on a wait list. When the wait list is full, they have nothing to offer interested parties. When we left around 3 P.M. for a break, they allowed DH to reserve his scooter for 6:00 when we planned to return, but they were very clear that if we were more than an hour late, it would go to someone else.

Thanks for the information.
I know when we've been to WDW at busier times, it is common to run out by 10:30 when the park opened at 9.

How long does it take to get through the rental process if we are there at rope drop. I can foresee thousand people heading to the rides before we get finished getting the scooter. Am I worried about losing too much time? We had been thinking about coming back after an hour in the park.

I have never rented a ECV but the way it work is that you go thought bag check then about 30 minutes before the park opens ( it could be 20) they let you in up to the tunnels under the train the ECV wheel chair renters are before you go under the tunnels on the right so I would plane on getting there about 45 minutes before the park opens after you go thought bag check head to now of the things you sceane your MG on the right then when you scan in go right to the rental place get your ECV and you should have no problem doing this before the welcome show starts even if you are not first in line.

Once a CM starts helping you, between 5 and 10 minutes total. Have your Credit card out as they will charge that immediately. You'll have a short form to fill out and then a short one page contract to read and sign. As long as you familiar with driving one, after the paperwork, they will assign you one and you can get on it and go. Being prepared and filling out the paperwork quickly saves your time. It's really not a lengthy or difficult process. I have rented ones in the park for my father.

I'm not sure if you are staying onsite or off. If you are staying onsite and using Disney transportation, I highly recommend renting with an offsite company. The first the we went (which was in june) my mom had no problem getting an ECV at any park when we got there at 11am ish and there was always one wherever we hopped. This wasn't the case when we went again a couple years later in July. She tried to walk as much as she could and finally gave up, saw the advertisement on the front of a rental scooter, got on her phone and reserved one right there to be delivered to our resort in an hour for wayyyy cheaper than the Disney one would have been. We used them again the next time we traveled.

I agree with Disney_traveler, if at all possible I'd suggest renting from off-site, it is generally cheaper and then you have one with you at any park you want to go to at any time.
