School Shootings - the kid lied

I know I'm living in a dream world - and this will never happen - but wouldn't it be great if the news reports would just wait a bit. Come out and tell people, "We don't know what is happening. When we do know, we'll tell you." Instead we get, "Here's a bunch of people who are going to speculate and guess as to what is happening - and we'll put anyone on the air who wants to make up a story. Beats admitting 'we don't know'".

Yes it would be great!

My niece and nephew were both struck by lightning this past summer while out on their lake. Of course I knew what had happened, the condition of both kids ... I'm family.

But the news reports were so off base with what they were saying about their conditions. As an example, one reporter said that my nephew was doing so well that he was back in the lake the next day. What?! He was still in the hospital and even once he was released he wasn't allowed to get the burn wet until it had healed sufficently. Not only that, but it was weeks, not a day, before he ever could face being afraid of the water.

So yeah, it would be nice if reporters waited until they had checked all the facts but I don't see that happening.

Wow, how sad.

I knew something was up when he said that - what kid when faced with a HOSTAGE situation is going to ask to stay??

You're right, most wouldn't. But I know that my ex-H would have insisted on staying because he was raised that way - such a gentleman. So it is possible someone would do that. But what a shame to go on tv and lie like that. I hope it wasn't just for attention. :sad2:

I know everyone is trying to be nice here-but maybe he lied because he wanted to be on TV. I agree that it's a good thing he came clean, but his motivation may have been as simple as wanting attention.
This is exactly what I was thinking...the media sensationalize these incidents entirely too much! This kid probably commented to one local media person and suddenly millions were surrounding him with cameras, recorders, etc. He was probably trying to think of a way out of his lie back then! It's pathetic that the media is no better than the tabloid photographers when it comes to a horrible story like this one. When I look at who to blame for these shootings and the subsequent false information that follows I see two distinct "criminals"...the actual person involved in the commission of the crime and the media. Do I blame the kid...not really.

This cracks me up. Someday, when this kid is grown and trying to teach his kids about honesty and doing the right thing, he's going to punish his kids. Then his parents will say, "Guess what your dad did when he was a kid?!"

He will never live it down.

I agree with the people saying HE IS JUST A KID!!!!!!! When he said that he didn't realize what was going to happen. He didn't know the girl was going to be killed. Give the kid a break.

I also agree WHY would the media focus on THIS are they trying to ruin a child's life when there are so much more important things to talk about and learn from this horrible thing. STUPID STUPID PEOPLE (the media!)

Did anybody else see it today? The kid that was all over the news yesterday saying he was one of the hostages in the room LIED! He is now admitting he lied and wasn't there.

He had been on every channel talking about how the gunman lined them up, tapped them and told them to leave. Made indications that the guy only wanted the girls to stay THEN was saying how he said he didn't want to go whne the gyunman tapped him and told him to leave. Saying he wante dto stay so the girls woudl feel better with "his support there". I knew something was up when he said that - what kid when faced with a HOSTAGE situation is going to ask to stay?? @@ I figured he wa slying about being brave to make himself look better- never figured he was lying about the entire thing just to get some freaking attention for himself. :confused3

Put yourself through a "GUNMAN just came in to my school and took my friends/classmates hostage" adrenaline overload and see what you do.
I'm not atacking you, just another side of the coin...

Anyone else terrified to send their kids to school. The more times these happen, the more I realize that ANYONE in my community even could snap and harm our children at school. Of course the more the media talks it up, the more thrilling it is for them as well. Home schooling sounds better and better.

Keep in mind that kids are extrondinarily safe in schools. We've got 100,000 or so schools, millions of kids in them, and a handful of incindents over the past decade. It's just that the meida plays up every one that happens.

Kids are probably safer in school than in your home.

I understand the stats... unless its your kid, the odds are very low that it will happen to you. That's with anything. one in a million means nothing if you are that one.

But we can't live life in a bubble. If you thought about every remote thing that could happen to you or your kids you'd go crazy. You wouldn't even feel safe in your own home b/c there are plenty of dangerous things that can happen there too - think about it. The best we can do is take sensible precautions and then get out there and live life!

I know this is all very scary. Now is not the time to make any drastic decisions. When emotions die down and perspective returns, the risk of your kids being in school won't feel so high anymore.
