My son has been scouring the internet looking for poster/slogan ideas for his run for student council. Did any of your kids have a great campaign poster that went over well? Thanks in advance. :)

I have been out of school for almost 30 years but I still remember a campaign that one girl did for treasurer. She used the yellow smiley face symbol and handed out those buttons to everyone. She was running for class treasure and her sign said, "Trust your loot with (her first name) Toot." Not the correct spelling of her name but it was neat that her last name rhymed with loot. I had never heard of her before that campaign but she won and became quite popular after that.

Most of the campaigns that I remember involved the student's name.

I remember one girl's name was Daisy. Her campaign was "Pick Daisy" and she handed out little paper flowers with her name on them.

Posters and campaigns never mattered in my schools. The same "popular" kids won every time regardless of what anyone ever put on a poster.

My son ran for student council in Grade 6. I told him we could bake cookies. He refused on the basis that it would be unethical to "buy votes". He then lost to a kid who gave out quarters to everyone in the class.

It was a lesson of sorts... ;)

Anyway, I think the same rules that apply to any advertising poster would apply to your son's - bright primary colours, his name clearly visible in the center of the poster, school mascot or colours or symbol, etc... You could always crib off of some of the recent presidential campaign posters.

My daughter won her student council election just 2 years ago...it was creative and she had fun with it!

She is very artistic, so drew a picture of Uncle Sam (the one where he is pointing his finger at you) and it said "I want You to vote for xxx for student council". Then she put one or two sentences below that of things she would like to do for the student if elected.

On election day she arrived at school early and handed out dum dums (the little suckers) and smarties. As she handed the candy out she said "Be a smartie, vote for xxx" or "don't be a dum dum, vote for xxx". She had approval from the principal before handing out the candy.

Not rocket science, but she won! Good luck!

Thanks for the input, everyone. I will pass it along to DS. He's not allowed to handout anything like sweets, etc. Which is too bad, because I love to bake, I could have helped him!

He's only allowed one poster. He's also one of those kids who never wants any help from Mom. So, I will take him to Michael's today and let him pick out some cool stuff and set him loose.

Can he hand out stickers? At our school, the kids get brightly colored strips of stickers and write vote for Your Name, and the kids have these sticking all over their shirts.

DSs have been on student council. For the poster, include photo(s) of your son if the school is large or he is in his first year of the school. He wants all of the kids to know who he is. A few cool facts about him are good (sports, hobbies, etc.). If he can, come up with a catchy phrase using his name (love the "pick Daisy"). If he has to give a speech, use humor.

Good luck!:cheer2:

One of my DSs swears this year's election was rigged by the teachers because all of the winners were the "not so popular" kids. Apparently, the kids discussed who they had voted for in the election, and they couldn't account for the results.
