My DD wants a "sling pack" this year as her backpack for school. She's in third grade. Has anyone used one of these? Will they work as good as regular backpacks?

No but they are very hip looking. :p

I've never used one or bought one for my kids. I've seen kids at ds' school with them. I wonder how well they distribute the weight of books and such. I guess take a load of bricks with ya (those books feel like they can weigh a ton) and let her try backpacks on.:D

My dd wanted one so I had her take it to the school supply aisle of the store and try to fit a folder in it first. She ended up with a different style.
I have a sling one that goes across the front of the body that we use at WDW and such. It's really comfortable to wear, if worn correctly. I noticed my dd was trying to use hers just over one shoulder in the store.

I use a sling pack and I really like it. It distributes the weight more evenly in the center of my back and doesn't cause shoulder or neck pain like regular backpacks can when they are loaded with stuff.

The ones that have only velco holding the sling strap together are not sturdy enough but the ones with the regular strap fastener with clips are great. I bought mine at Eddie Bauer and it's lasted 10+ years and still going strong.

My friends daughter (who was in 3rd grade last year) had one, and while it held alot, she HATED it because her books were do darn heavy that it was hard to carry. You didn't have your back bearing the weight of the pack.. it was all on the shoulder.. something to consider. But I do agree, they are cute! ;)
