scavenger hunts?

has anyone done a scaven. hunt with their kids before their trip?
i was wondering if anyone can help me out with ideas? and also how far in advance do you do it, i have a little over 200 days to go till our trip, so do you advise i do this very close to the trip? etc.
thanks for any input you can give me

I know quite a few people have done them on here.

I have not done one yet.

But since your kids are younger, I would not do it more than a month away.

Do you want your kids to be asking you,is it time yet to leave for the next 7 months?

DH and I are currently planning one too. We are doing ours 2 weeks before we leave, the kids don't know we're going so it's a complete surprise. We are going all over town for it, so it's pretty elaborate. I'm still not completely awake yet, so I'll have to post our ideas later. DH has gotten pretty clever with it!

All clues are disney movie related.
We are starting with a letter from secret "MM" (we will write it and put it in the mailbox or use fairy godmailer)
kids will get the letter and there will be a treasure map and eye patches with it leading them to the next clue that they have to dig out of the backyard (pirates from peter pan or POTC)...
That clue will take us to the car rental place (Cars)...
From there we will take them to follow the Indian trails at our local state park (Pocahontas)...then they will find a field of Bambi animals with Thumper and Flower in a patch of flowers...
That will then take them to our local farmer's market to find Pooh's Useful Pot with the Hunny they sell with the next clue attached to a popped ballon...

That's as far as we've gotten with the order, but we will also be using Nemo at the pet store, Cinderella's slipper at a shoe store, Snow White's apple, and somehow, Under the Sea but we live in Indiana, so not sure about that one yet! We want a total of 12 clues, all of them ending at my mom's house and the last clue being Nana from Peter Pan because that's what they call my mom. She will have a final letter from "MM" and the tickets. When they figure it out, my parents will have my huge Mickey Dinner set up and we'll have a big party. Kids are DS-7, DD-6, DD-4, and we are suprising my brother-12 with his first trip for his 13th bday so he'll be hunting the clues as well.

OK it's a good idea to read all posts before you post!!!! I didn't realize it was a scav hunt on the trip. DUH!! Sorry. But hey, this is a cool idea..Oh goody, more planning!

We are preparing for our 1st WDW Adventure and at 100 days we did a scav. hunt. My kids are 10,8,5 and I thought it would give them enough time to plan and get excited and since I'm always asking "is it almost time yet?" I guess it won't bother me if the kids do

I did picture clues that had to be put in order to make a sentence...

This.......pic of sun which meant summer, We ....R.....pic of airplane.......2.......and then Daddy held the final pic clue....A big pic of Mickey and the castle....

Being from So. Cal my kids immediately thought DL until we reminded them of the airplane clue....Then they were insane!!! I wanted to make sure my 5 year old was as involved as my other two..

Have fun!!! Telling them is half the fun!
