Ugh. I liked that she was curvy, and different from the cookie cutter young actresses.

Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson is reportedly shedding her famous curves, as she is following a diet plan for a new role. The North actress has reportedly lost over 14 pounds, after she began working out with Gwyneth Paltrow’s trainer Tracy Anderson, in a bid to shape up for Iron Man 2.

“The pair have been doing daily workouts with Gwyneth’s personal trainer Tracy Anderson,” the Sun quoted a source as saying. "Scarlett is also staying away from carbohydrates,” the source added. Scarlett reportedly decided to cut few extra pounds after she felt leaner actresses might bag her roles.

"Scarlett shedding her famous curves to stay competitive"??? I thought women were supposed to be curvy??? My husband can't stand 12 y/o boy looking, stick straight women

"“Scarlett has always been happy with her curves, but recently she has been feeling pressure to lose a few pounds,” a pal said. “She knows that she is up against tough competition from younger, prettier and increasingly skinner actresses,” the pal added."

I looked it up. She's 24. There's already stiff competition from the younger set? :sad2:

Sad is right.

People are always going to criticize actresses losing weight (and actresses gaining weight -- basically people just like to criticize actresses  ), even in cases where they actually get healthier. Without actually seeing invasive stats about Johansson's weight loss, there is no way to know whether she has improved her health or not. Generally (the word "generally" is an important word in this sentence -- if you choose to read the entire sentence, then be sure to keep the word "generally" in mind, rather than reading the sentence without understanding that it started with the word "generally"), people who lose weight by exercising actually improve their health.

IMDB lists all the reasons she shouldn't lose weight just to be thinner:

Ranked #9 in FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World (2005). And was also the highest ranking new entry to the list.

Named #24 on the Maxim magazine Hot 100 of 2005 list.

Was featured as #63 in Maxim Magazine's "Hot 100 of 2002" supplement. (2002)

Named #6 on Maxim magazines "Hot 100" list of 2006

Chosen by FHM readers as "Sexiest Woman Alive" in FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World (2006).

Named "Sexiest Woman Alive" by Esquire Magazine [October, 2006].

Named #1 in FHM magazine's "100 Sexiest Women in the World 2006" supplement. (2006).

Has been named the Sexiest Celebrity of 2007 by Playboy Magazine.

Ranked #3 on the Maxim magazine Hot 100 of 2007 list.

Ranked #2 on the Maxim magazine Hot 100 of 2008 list.

If it's for a role in a movie, she'll probably go back to normal once she's done filming. I agree she looks better with curves.

What a real shame.

I can't figure out why the public seems to think that every single woman should be 5'8", blonde and 105 pounds.

Can't the general public get it through their heads that every woman is different?

Evidently, she was just sooooo fat in the left picture taken this past December.

The weight obsession makes me sad...yet, I am compelled to look, too. Ugh. I sometimes hate the media! Who would kick her out of bed? Or Jessica Simpson in her mom jeans?!? No men I know would!

she looks hard now.
and that is not a good thing.
scarlett was always my favorite actress, i'm going to give her the benefit of a doubt that she got skinny for a role. like renee zeilweger got curvy for bridget jones diary.

And remember, curvy Bridget had Colin Firth and Hugh Grant fighting each other for her affections. What many of us would give to be in that situation!

I think it is Johansson's critics who are falling prey to Hollywood's thirst for sensationalism. It is good to see that Johansson, herself, treats such criticisms with the derision and contempt that those criticisms deserve:
Scarlett Johansson has laughed off reports she is on a crash-diet to keep up with slimmer Hollywood stars.

Johansson stunned fans in recent months after showing off a more streamlined figure, having previously maintained she was proud of her curves.

Her weight loss prompted tabloid speculation the 24-year-old had embarked upon a strict diet and fitness regime after fearing she would lose out on acting roles to thinner stars.

But Johansson is adamant her new figure is the result of shaping up in preparation for her role as Black Widow in the forthcoming Iron man sequel.

Her spokesman tells WENN, "The press is making something out of nothing. She is simply getting into shape for a very demanding, physical role in 'Iron Man 2.'"
I personally find criticisms of the effects of a healthy diet and exercise to be pretty troubling. Fitness is something we all should be striving for and admiring within those it is achieved. To label better fitness, which is what Johansson has achieved, as being "over-thin" is ridiculous and counter-productive, especially in light of the fact that there really are a small number of people who are indeed thinner than is healthy. To categorize all fit women in that manner is disrespectful to those women who are fit, rather than over-thin.

This <link> is the physical ideal that Johansson is pursuing. (That's her exercise trainer, Tracy Anderson, from a Harper's Bazaar article.) I know a lot of men (at least) are too insecure to allow such a visage to be attractive to them, but that's their problem. What I'm confused about is why women are so affronted by a woman appearing strong and healthy?
