Scanning from a book?

Has anyone done this to create clip art. I am not finding some characters at good quality and thought I could maybe scan books. Has anyone done it this way? Tips and tricks? I am still learning. Thank you!

I have scanned from books. I also scan pages from coloring books all the time and color them in myself. Get really great images this way.
