scalp sunscreen - where can I find it?

I read an awesome tip on here that recommended scalp sunscreen for those with thinning hair. I called my local Walgreens, who I thought would be the most likely to carry something like that, but of course they didn't (or I wouldn't be posting this, now would I?) ;)

So,...I'm wondering, since I live in podunk LaCrosse, Wisconsin, if anyone can help me with some brand names, or names of stores that sell this type of product.

I'm going to check out these stores around town: Wal-Mart, Shopko, K-Mart and Target. I will probably ask at a couple of hair salons if that doesn't work.

I've found only one brand name on the web so far -- ScalpBlock, but they're charging $12.95 +s/h for only 2 ounces! So I'm keeping them in my back pocket for an absolute emergency -- in case I can't find anything else locally.

I'd really hate to have to wear a baseball hat every day we're there (and hang on dearly to it as we go on some of the faster attractions!) Can anyone help me stock up on this particular item?

Thanks much. I appreciate it.

Jon

I use scalp screen for my DD when she wears pigtails so her part doesn't get burnt. I found some for babies at Toys R Us and I also use it when I wear my hair in a ponytail. It is the spray kind and works fine for both of us. I think it is calles TenderScalps or something like that. I comes in a small pink bottle and is not that expensive.

Banana Boat makes a great hair and scalp spray. My DH burns very easily, and has been losing his thick mane for several years now...and just loves the stuff. I wasn't able to find it at any of the Targets/Walmarts/Walgreens in my area (Minnneapolis area), but I did find it at my local grocery store (non-chain...go figure!) I also know you can find it on-line at various drugstore websites.
While I don't remember it being in the $13.00 dollar range, I could be wrong...but the stuff really, really works. Good luck!

Bull Frog Spray on Qic-Gel!!!!! My DS has very short (clipper setting #2, quasi-wiffle haircut) light brown hair with fair skin. I spray this stuff on him everymorning for Day Care, and do his head as well. I have also used it in my part in my hair. Works like a charm!!!!

I use the banana boat scalp spray too for my DH and DS both with clippered hair. It works great and doesn't make your hair greasy or anything. I believe I bought it at k-mart but I usually have to look for it and buy a few when I find it.

I don't know about scalp spray but thought I would say Hi(waving hand franticly) . I live in Independence, WI. About an hour North of you. We're leaving tonight. I have 6 bottles of sunscreen for 8 days. Us Notherners need it. Stacy

I probably didn't catch you in time....but I wanted to wish you all the best with your trip, neighbor! :)

just a weird question - why do you need a specific sunscreen for your scalp? can't you just use the same type you use for the rest of your body? i always use coppertone oil-free, so there's no greasyness left over....

My DD is very blonde and has very thin hair. When I apply sunscreen to her we just automatically rub some of it on her scalp too. It doesn't make her hair greasy either. I'd just use regular sunscreen - it really works!

You're right - you definitely can use the same as you use for your body, and in the past I've done that.

However, it's always left my hair very greasy, and I end up looking like I have even less hair than I do.

The scalp-specific products come in spray bottles, which are much easier to apply than a lotion, and some of the characteristics you need to consider for your scalp don't necessarily apply to what you'd put on your back, especially if you're applying other products to your scalp to try to slow down hair loss.

Personally I don't use Minoxidil or anything like that.

By the way, I ended up buying Coppertone spray, SPF30. It's alcohol free and non-greasy (so the label says). Hopefully that will do the trick without making me too un-photogenic!

Hey, Jon, be sure to let us know how the Coppertone works for you, and if you were happy with how it looked!

I just picked up some scalp spray yesterday at Toys R Us. It was $4.99 and called Tender...something and came in pink packaging. I haven't tried it yet but hope it works for my almost 1 year old who won't keep a hat on.

I used regular spray-on sunscreen for arms and legs, etc., but I found a thick sunscreen at Bath and Body Works that I used for my face and ears. Would that work for scalp? It wasn't oily at all.

I read about the Banana Boat scalp sunscreen online. My local Walgreen's did not have it, but I found it at Meijer's. I have used it once (on my part) with good results.

You can also use a sunscreen specifically for faces - it will not be oily.

I just bought some for my daughter the other day at Walmart-it is called Baby Blanket "Tender Scalps". It is sunscreen for baby scalps 45+ SPF alcohol-free, non-stringing, paba-free and water resistant. I imagine you would need to reapply several times during the day-you know how that goes-but has worked great for her. It is in a small 2 fl oz. spray bottle-pink with clear top on it. I think it was only a couple of bucks-or I would not have tried it. Good Luck!

I bought dh Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Protector at K-mart. It was a little pricey ($6.00), but I couldn't find anything cheaper and it should last a long time, so hopefully it will be worth the price.

Hi ! I was the one who posted before on a different thread about the Baby Blanket Brand Tender Scalps Sunblock. I got it at Babies R Us and it works great for both my DD(2) & myself (I use it where my hair is parted). You can also get it online at www.onestepahead.com .

It is WELL worth it. Cancun in July, plus a crew cut, can attest to that fact. Previous time I went there in august, my head burned and peeled. It was the nastiest thing.
