Saying Goodbye: Becoming part of a living coral reef (with pics)

I'm so happy this turned out to be such a positive experience for you- what a wonderful way to memorialize your mom!

What a beautiful thing to do for someone.

If you were dive-certified, would they let you go down with them for the placement?

What a wonderful story! I love the picture of you throwing the rose petals. I'm glad you'll have such special memories of saying goodbye to your mom!:)

Ember  Thank you so much for sharing your experience. You are a very strong woman - who has an amazing husband and I'm sure your Mummy is very proud of you!

Ember, thank you for sharing this special time with us.

Thanks for posting this-it's something I've never heard of.

I'm not sure. I believe in most cases you're witnessing the actual lowering of the cement reef and you watch it being placed on the ocean floor. In our case, we were having the ashes placed into a reef that was already there and had life growing on it. So that was a little different. (Sorry if that's not a clear answer, it never came up during our visit.)

wow! This is incredible! How deep is the site?

It's 30 feet deep. Apparently on very good days you can actually see the reef from the boat. The day we were out wasn't that perfect, but we could still see a fair ways down.

I'm glad I could share it. The people here helped me through the hardest year of my life with support and kindness. It only seemed right to share the ending, too.

After everything that happened, this was a truly incredible way to really say goodbye. It left me with a feeling of peace after so much strife.

so touching and peaceful, just a beautiful way to lay your mom to rest. I beleive the turtles and dolphins were not a fluke...nature just knows :goodvibes I know right where you guys were at, my DD attends school at Ringling College of Art and Design, 2 miles down from the mansion you saw. Lovely waters and beaches there, just a humbling area of where land and water meet It will be so awesome if you guys can dive down on your own, what a great plan!

ITA!!!

Ember,
I was telling DD11 the other day about what my plans are, hopefully she will be an adult and I can see my grandkids before I pass.

But I was saying when they are done with my body-donate for science-i want my ashes to be sprinkled? in the waters of Oahu, but you know, the resting place for your mom, well that is cool to to be part of where sea life would live.
