Saved lots of money using FL Tours and a taxi

We are family that doesn't like to wait on busses, so we have always rented a van. We just returned a few hours ago and have a new plan that we love! We were a party of 6: 2 adults, 1 teen, 2 adolescents, and 1 11-month old.

The cost of a minivan (with a great DIS discount) would have been $400 for 10 days, plus the rental cost of a car seat. Fl Tours sent a 10 passenger van for a DIS, round-trip cost of $95. Whenever we didn't want to wait for a bus, we call for a yellow van taxi and approx. $8-10 per ride. That was virtually anywhere in the World and included a tip.

On some days, we didn't use them but to the water parks, Downtown Disney, etc.... they were a lifesaver! We averaged 1 cab ride per day and they always had a car seat, too. They dropped us right at the gate area and we didn't not have to get into a boiling hot parked van.

A couple of warnings, though. Don't use a white van! They are renegades that are not sanctioned by WDW. They don't have meters or set prices. You are at their whims, even if they charge you $40 to go from Boardwalk to Downtown Disney. Also, take a cell phone with you to call a cab yourself when you are away from your hotel. The Boardwalk valets had a quicker response than our personal phone calls. We rarely waited at the hotel but had a couple of 15-20 minute waits when we called ourselves. Also, if you are a family of 6 or more, always specify a van taxi.

The bottom line for us was this: A total transportation cost of under $300 for 10 days; no valet parking tips; no cost for renting a car seat; no risks of accidents; no getting in and out of a hot vehicle; saved money with faster transportation than the WDW system.

Hope this helps somebody!

Thanks for the tip on cabs while at WDW.

We are also going for 10 nights and are also planning on doing a transfer from the airport and then use taxis as need be. I was thinking that the taxis would be a little more than $8-10, so I'm glad to hear they are not. Thanks for the warning on the white taxis. How much did you tip??

We tipped around 15%, but usually rounded up to the nearest dollar. The more travel time during peak/high traffic times, the higher the fare. BTW, we stayed at Boardwalk. I think that MK and farther resorts might be a bit more.

More info on the taxi situation, as described by more than one driver:

The yellow/Checker cabs are at WDW by permission and the company assigns cabs to WDW as their primary territory. The white/non-metered cabs are only allowed to pick guests if a yellow cab is not present. They can be in the taxi queue but cannot take passengers if a yellow cab is there, even if it is in the front of the line.

Thanks for information. We have a group of 10 going in October and am thinking we would need 2 rental cars so perhaps supplementing WDW transportation with taxis might be cheaper - and easier!

I'm thinking of using a taxi to go from MGM to Typhoon Lagoon. Is this a case where I would need to call for one from my cell phone? If so, is there a specific company I need to call?

Thanks for all the info!

Megrod74, I would take your cell phone in case there are no taxis in the queue. If you are trying to get out when the park closes for weather issues, you may not get one or you may have to wait. If you call on your cell (699-9999), they will have one there just for you.

We only saw the yellow/Checker cabs and the white/unofficial cabs. Stay with the yellow ones! They communicate with each other and have onboards computers to share info. We were waiting at DD for a van taxi and a regular cab was there. The regular cab driver kept in touch with us while she waited on a regular fare, telling us where our cab was and assuring us that it was on the way.

Mscrapper, it might ave you money, unless you get a great rate for two cars. The van taxi could hold ten people (3 benches and the front seat), so you could potenially save a bunch to travel for only $20-25/day. I wold suggest that you call the cab company and be sure that the van taxi would hold 10 people. 407-699-9999.
