hi everyone...we are headed down to hh in about a week but have 2 days first to spend time in savannah which we always wanted to see. there are 8 of us and some of the party thought it was important to stay in the historic district to get the true flavor of the city and to make it easy to see the ghost/graveyard tour, visit the lady and sons and mrs wilkes boarding house. i thought though that it would be a good idea to stay somewhere a little more economical midtown or near the airport and just drive in to see the sights for the day. is this smart, will it be a pain? anyone have any insight or an experience that might be similar that just worked perfectly for them (or a wonderful place to stay recommendation)??? just want to make the right decision so it begins a perfect week before we relax for 5 nights at dvc hhi :) (bleu and shadow here we come ! )thanks in advance everyone...this board is amazingly helpful most of the time !!!:bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

There's a Days Inn in the historic district, so maybe you could be economical and in the area. I don't know where the airport is in Savannah, but I'd stay stay in the historic area since you can walk most everywhere. There is also a Westin and a Hyatt I think that you might be able to get a good internet rate. Have a great time!

I would vote for staying downtown.

Some of my family lives on Tybee Island. I dread driving into the shopping part of Savannah because of the traffic.

We pass through historic downtown fine. Traffic is not that bad there.

The horrible part is the part of Savannah where everyone lives and shops. That is where you would find the cheaper hotels. You would have to travel down Abercorn or one of the side streets to reach the tourist areas.

We have stayed at the Courtyard in downtown. It is a few blocks removed from the action but within walking distance of both tour bus companies.

There are also quite a few hotels at I-95 and 204. But staying here you would have to drive through the awful traffic to reach historic downtown.

Any hotels near the airport would also involve traveling down Abercorn to visit historic downtown.

In case it wasn't obvious... avoid Abercorn at all costs.

If you want to eat some seafood at Tybee my cousin owns StingRays. Home of the blue crab. It is on Butler by the Howard Johnson. You can't miss it.

There is also a Hampton inn and a Holiday Inn (Mulburry house I think). A number of B&B's as well. Just find what you can that fits your situation as it will all be expensive. I'd stay in the historic district though in your situation.

it is right next to and affiliated with the hampton inn. Awesome!

There are some "chain" hotels in Downtown Savannah that would be a little cheaper than a Bed and Breakfast. If at all possible, I would suggest staying Downtown. Do not stay at the airport and drive in, that is a 25 min. drive to Downtown. Staying midtown would be okay, but don't stay on the Southside, as the traffic would be horrible.

The Mulberry, which is part of Holiday Inn is downtown:

As mentioned, there is also a Hampton Inn downtown:

You will find a lot of info on www.savannah.com

One word of advice, it is HOT and HUMID here right now. If you go on one of the city tours, get on one with the air conditioned enclosed bus. The horse drawn carriage tours look great, but trust me, you'll be glad to be in the AC!

Have a great trip!

There are many great B&Bs in the Historic District. I would highly recommend staying downtown since everything will be within walking distance then. Walking around and seeing the parks and river is the main charm of Savannah.

Make sure you make reservations a day or two in advance at Lady and Sons. It is a wonderful restaurant, but it is small and fills up quickly.

We made a trip there in June for our anniversary and totally enjoyed our time there.

Enjoy!

I rmember a hotel right on the river where all the small shops, river boat and restaurants are. I am sorry I can't rmember the name but it would be a good location. Everything is in walking distance of the river walk or you can get a carriage or trolley.
