DH and I are considering/thinking about moving in a few years and Savannah, GA or Valdosta, GA were possibilities for us (job related).

We love the south and southern culture to begin with, but both cities offer great things it seems like. We love to travel and Savannah is a quick drive to Hilton Head and other great places - most importantly a few hour drive to WDW!

Do any of you wonderful DISers have any opinions of Savannah/Valdosta/GA? We know no one there and, other than what you can find online about the cities, know nothing about either city.

I have not been to Savannah. I have been to Valdosta once. They have a theme park there called Wild Adventures, which is decent. They also have Valdosta State University. Other than that I don't know much about it. I always got the impression that it was a small city without a whole lot of opportunity. But the cost of living there is pretty low (most of Georgia is anyway.) I-75 also runs through it. Have fun deciding where to move!

I live in Georgia, and I like it. Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia, there is a lot of History there, and they one of the St. Patrick day celebrations. Valdosta is cool too. Just remember that GA gets HOT during the summer, so if your not use to weather that’s sticky hot and even hotter at times, the summer can be horrid.

We live in Louisiana so humidity is quite common to us - unfortunately ;) .

Hi!

We live in Savannah and love it! We have only been here since May and unfortunately we will be moving again in the next few months (Military move). If I had my choices of places to live, this would be it. It is absolutely gorgeous, the people are friendly and there is so much to do here. The job market is pretty good. The drawback here is the crime. There is quite a bit of it, more than I expected. Please let me know if you have any more questions...
Oh, by the way it does get hot and humid here but the worst part is only for about 3 months, then the rest of the year is pleasant!

we condidered savannah about a year ago, but are very unsure. The public schools are not great and private are very expensive. The murder rate is off the charts and continues to rise. Find a good realestate agent and hope for a good area, but be prepared to pay to live there. We are still not totally convinced against the move and have visited and gone house hunting several times. We spoke to lots of locals who gave us great advise. I would suggest visiting and not doing the tourist thing but venture out on unbeatten paths to get a true idea of what it is like. Do not get me wrong there is lots of wonderful places to live there you just really need to beware of the surrounding.

The crime rate is one that worried me. I read some info on it. :( Where we live now is "safe" (although we know anything can happen anywhere) and we hate to take our kids out of that. We've got good public schools now and expensive private schools might be out reach.

We still have a year or two to think about it. Maybe by then the crime will lessen. :confused3
