SARS and our trip to Toronto

Is there anyone else that this may affect! We are not going until 5th August but we have to pay the balance of our flights in the next 3-4 weeks. If we changed before then all we would possibly loose is £300 deposit, if we can't claim it through our insurance. I would go if it was just DH and myself but I really don't want to take the children, I know the risks are probably minimal but I have had my children seriously ill on holiday before and believe me its no joke. So let me know if you agree with what we have decided - that is to wait until 3-4 days before the balance is due and make a firm decision then but in the mean time take a look around and get some idea of where we would like to go instead - DH suggest Orlando but we went last year and are going next year and the year after and as much as I love Disney I fancied a change but we are thinking of maybe Miami and the keys with the possibility of 2-3 days in Orlando before we fly home.

I agree with what you have chosen to do.

Since the WHO's announcement advised people not to go for the next three weeks, I'd assume that after that time they will be making another announcement which will give you a clearer picture.

Worse case scenario, if Toronto doesn't turn a corner and they make a similar announcement, aren't you entitled to a refund since we are being told not to go?

I also agree, but have been hearing that most of the people affected in the (large) population of Toronto are staff at the hospital where there are cases.

In any infection like this it is impossible to tell so many months in advance of what's going to happen. I wouldn't cancel yet, after all the number of cases compared to the population is relatively few. Toronto is a wonderful place to visit, and it would a shame to cancel and find out everything is fine by August or sooner. Or on the opposite scale of things, the virus could have spread well outside Toronto to other cities, the US or the UK and then where would we be?

I would check your travel insurance to see what would happen if there was a general travel advisory from the Foreign Office not to travel to the destination you had booked. If your travel insurance allows you to cancel and claim back all of your money, I would pay the deposit on your Toronto holiday and then decide what's best to do closer to your date of travel. As #1MMFan said, the outbreak in Toronto is very specific, with hospital workers and other associates of the first victims the main groups affected.

What a worry for you.

They were interviewing a few Toronto natives yesterday on the news and they all seemed horrified that their city had been branded as no go zone. They all said the infection was only in a specific area - nowhere likely that tourists would visit.

If you do think of changing, would highly recommend the Florida Keys. We spent some time down there after a week on Marco Island last October (loved Marco so much we're back for 10 nights this October ).

The Keys are lovely, especially if you like wildlife and watersports. We stayed on Islamorada, just short of half way through the keys and had a great stay. The Everglades are well worth a visit, especially on an airboat ride.

We've 6 nights in Orlando first this year and the only blot on the landscape is having to fly back from Orlando (only flights available) rather than Miami, but it's only 4 hour (leisurely) drive, so not really a huge problem.

Hi there, my inlaws are due to fly to Toronto in approx 10 days time!!!, they are flying with BA, and were told, they could still fly but they would be rerouted(at an extra cost to them!), they could have a full refund,or change the date to fly, up untill 23rd June. Im not sure what their answer has been as I havent spoken to them today, Im assuming they will still go and fly into another airport. I think Toronto are playing safe at present, and I personally would go ahead and pay your balance, if a few weeks down the line they are still insistant that people shouldnt fly there then, youd be okay to claim.

I guess its one of those situations that you have to be in to appreciate. My inlaws are both well into their 60s and have the attitude"What will be will be". Its differant when you have children, so tough call.
