santa came early......nikon D70 under my tree....HELP!

Hi all....my dh bought me the D70 by Nikon for xmas. He gave it too me early so I can learn to use it a little before I need to take xmas pics. but I am more than a little overwhelmed right now. Anyone have one of these SLRs that can help me out. Want to take a shot of my tree without flash to get the full effect of my lights. What settings do I need to use. I know I will be taking a few classes, but right now as much as I love this gift, I Have a HEADACHE......help

stupid me told dh I didn't want one of those for Christmas although I already have the lenses for it from my SLR of course that was BEFORE it got camera of the year and tons of rave reviews!

The good thing about Digital is you can play with it all you want without having to develop all the film to find out exactly what you are looking for! A friend of mine actually kept a little notebook with the picture # and what she had all her settings on (yep that you Jenny2 if you are reading - lol) That is way to much work for me!
I still just hold down the flash with my finger when I don't want flash - neermind finding the proper way in the book to do it! LOL
PLAY PLAY PLAY is what I say - you will get it!
SLR's ingeneral take a little getting use to!

I am playing.....click click click. LOL about the flash thing.....I have figured that out, mind you that is about all I have figured out so far. I am trying for a perfect tree pic and then I shall move on from there.

So many things to learn, so little time in the day. Love the absence of lag time with this compared to my HP850, how awesome!!!!

Cindy, what a wonderful gift!! Have fun using it!! A friend had the D70 at a party recently - WOW!! We have the lenses for it, so someday we'll get the camera to go with them .

I have the n75 and all the pics i have done without the flash got terrible.. Dont even attempt it if you dont have a tripod or put it on something ....All the wedding pics i took did not get ....I take with my regular point and shoot all the time with out the flash and they get great but the srls are very touchy .....Let me know how you did it if you get good ones lol... Am still learning after a year an a half lol ....

Ahhhhhhhhhh Lori....I fear that will be me. Although my old point and shoot was digital and took horrible indoor shots, even with the flash. It was so bright it washed everything out. However outdoor it was amazing. I fear I will be missing to many things while I learn.

My cute little way of describing the new toy" I got a camera with a mortgage for xmas and it will take a college degree to use it" every one laughs...............except me.

Ok I did get some decent shots.....I had to go to White balance in the P setting, change to incandescent lighting, then change to a plus 3 rating to add more blue/green to the pics. They were coming up yellowish. It has helped.
