We are flying in and out of Sanford for the first time. Are there any restaurants close by so we could grab some food before our flight home? Also, since the airport is on the small side, is there really a need to be there two hours before our departure time? I assume the security lines won't be like Orlando International! Any feedback is appreciated.

We flew into Sanford last month for the first time also. It is a great small airport but there is alot of room for growth and will eventually have alot more traffic. THe runways are quite large and it seemed like we taxied for miles.
I dont know about food places nearby, the airport is pretty much in the middle of nowhere) we were too much in a hurry to get to WDW to notice.
There are food places at the terminal although we didnt eat there.
I dont think there is a need to get there 2 hours early, but check your airlines rules and regulations. I have to tell you on the return flight to home, we got stuck in a major traffic jam on I-4 on the way to the airport. We got to the airport at 9:45 and our flight departed at 9:55. We were the only passengers in the terminal building it seemed and to our suprise they let us board. We went through security and ran to the opposite side of the building and got on the plane with 3 minutes to spare. Whew!

Moral to this story dont take I-4 back to the airport! :thumbsup2

It's been a few years since we flew into Sanford. IIRC, there's a small cafe near baggage claim where you can order hot food and sandwiches. Upstairs near the gate, there's another food place that offers sandwiches and other items. I think there was a bar, or at least a place where you could get a beer.

For our trips home, we were in the habit of picking up sandwiches from what used to be gourmet Mickey's in DTD. They had a great kids meal available as well. That location is now the Earl of Sandwich and I know the kids' meals are no longer there, but you may be able to pick up a few sandwiches to take with you.

Hope this helps.

Almost forgot...yes, we did arrive at the airport 1.5-2 hrs before. Perhaps it depends on your airline, but checkin for what was then Southeast airlines took a looong time.
