San Diego Zoo the Saturday of Labor Day weekend?

Hi! We'll be in Anaheim from 8/30-9/4. We really want to take a day and drive down to San Diego to hit the zoo and possibly Cabrillo National Monument (if there is time - kids have national park passports and love getting stamps). We chose Saturday to go based on feedback about weekday traffic, but it just occurred to me it's Labor Day weekend, and now I'm wondering if making that drive is a mistake traffic-wise and crowd-wise? We're early risers so we'd get up and hit the road early as necessary. Thoughts?

I haven't worked at the zoo in about 25 years, but when I did, the middle day of a 3 day weekend was always the busiest. Saturday or Monday would be best.

FWIW, I made the drive last Saturday and cars going south on the 5 were barely moving. Weekday traffic is bad during the morning and evening commute. Saturday traffic can be bad anytime of the day.
