San Diego to Disneyland???

I am considering a trip to San Diego and then to DL. I like to rent a car in San Diego to get around, but do not want to drive to DL if I don't have to, and do not need a car while I am there.....So what are my options:
1. can we take a train from SD to DL? if so how do you work getting rid of the rental car?
2. If I brave the drive from SD to DL how do i get rid of the rental car and then get to DL?
3. Just keep the car the whole trip even if I don't need it?

I'm not sure how many days you'll be at DL, but personally, I'd just keep the car. It would be so much easier. Anyway, after DL you'll have to get back to San Diego to fly out, right? Plus, you may want to do some things outside of DL. A couple of weeks ago I was able to book a really cheap rental car in Southern Calif, something like $18 per day incl/ all taxes and fees. To me it's worth it. Your drive time from San Diego will be about 90 minutes during low traffic (plus you can use the carpool lanes with the two of you). JMHO!

Yes, you can take the train. It is about $46, one-way. If you rent your car from a location at the SD airport, I'm sure you can drop it off and get a taxi to the train station.

The drive really isn't bad. You get on I-5 in SD and get off it when you get to DL!...very simple. You may have to pay a 1-way drop off fee for the car though.

This is the option I would probably take. Unless it is going to cost you a LOT more to keep it. If you are going back to SD, it is probably easier and less expensive to keep the car. I personally like knowing I can hop in the car and go somewhere else, if I get the urge! ....Whatever you decide, have a ton-o-fun!!!

There are tour companies that offer day trips to Disneyland and pick up from local San Diego hotels and then drop off at the end of the day. You will be stuck sticking to their schedule but it sounds like it would be cheaper than taking the train. Google San Diego tours and see what you come up with.

I think $46 is the round trip price. $23 one way. If you can leave from Oceanside, it will be less than $10 using Metrolink.

But I agree with everyone and think you should keep the car and drive.

We just did this trip last month. The ride to and from DL to SAN is easy and pretty fast. I suggest getting a good rate with Alamo via costco if you can. From there either keep the car or there is an easy drop in DT Disney that would be so easy to use once you have checked into your hotel. This is also the most economical! Have fun!!!

DW and I leave on Friday for San Diego/Disneyland and just decided to keep our rental car for the whole trip, even though five of the nine days we'll be there will be spent at DL.

We've flown in and out of San Diego and done Disneyland. The drive is easy.

I'd suggest driving the car up, and if you really don't want it whil at Disney (it will actually be handy for meals off site, but there is parkin to contend with!), look into either dropping it at an airport (like SNA) and taking a shuttle back, or renting from Avis who I believ has a desk at a motel on Harbor. You might want to check if other car rental places have desks that you can drop off at around there.
