The zoo closes as 4pm and we'll need to feed the kids before heading back into the Anaheim area. Any suggestions for a nice, San Diego feeling restaurant thats appropriate for families? I can go to TGI Fridays, Outback type restaurants here at home. We'd like to go somewhere with a San Diego flavor. Thanks~

I'd suggest going into Old Town. There are some good and not too expensive restaurants there. Last August, we ate at a Mexican place that was pretty good (sorry, don't remember the name). There's also a good seafood restaurant on the water in Downtown SD--it's right next to the Star of India. Again, can't remember the name.

The restaurant next to the Star of India (the ship) is probably Anthony's Fish Grotto. It's okay but not my favorite. Parking downtown or Hillcrest is so very bad. Old Town is a great suggestion. I think the popular restaurant, especially with kids, would be the Old Town Mexican Cafe. Once again, parking is bad. Try parking at the high school and walk. Sometimes they charge a small fee but at least it is a parking space. Oh, I have an idea! Go to Point Loma Seafood Market! The fish is fresh, they have parking (albeit kinda limited but always manage to find a place for my huge truck) and the seating is picnic benches along on the covered side of the building. If the kids don't like seafood, how about Italian. There are two locations for Filippi's Pizza Grotto but the one in Little Italy you can actually get parking for. The one in Hillcrest is smaller and has a coffee shop atmosphere and you need to park on the street. I love their antipasti salad!!! Yum!!! What a great idea for lunch. If it is a nice day, the best place with atmosphere outside of Old Town (well, this point can be argued) is Miguel's Mexican Cantina in Coronado. But that is kinda far south and you have to go over that bridge! Some people are intimidated by the bridge. If all else fails, there is a McDonalds down the street at the corner of A and 5th? (whatever the street is that goes along the side of Balboa Park).

I vote for Old Town. Eat at the "Old Town Cafe". Very yummy mexican food. They make homemade tortillas in the window at the front of the place. You can see it when you walk by on the street. And if you are sitting waiting for a table, the ladies might give you one to snack on.

If you're looking for Mexican food, then consider:

Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill (yummy Fish Tacos...our tykes enjoy the kid's meal, particularly their cheese quesadillas and churros):

Fin's Mexican Eatery (another place for Fish Tacos, right off of Interstate 5 in La Jolla...DH is more into their shrimp burritos, though):

Old Town Mexican Cafe (recommended in previous posts):

Rockin' Baja Lobster is also a fun place (they have a restaurant in Old Town):

A couple more restaurants come into mind. Not Mexican food, but they're kid-friendly, not expensive and many locals frequent them:

Pat & Oscar's (yummy, yummy breadsticks):

Corvette Diner (also recommended in a previous post):

You guys are great! I knew I could count on this board to help me out with suggestions. Thanks for such a quick response! If there are any more suggestions, keep 'em coming!

we are staying at the Hotel Del Coronado for 2 nights and looking for places for dinner as well, thank you for those recommendations! Have to try a fish taco, don't have any here in Massachusetts!!

We've never had anything like this also. I'm mignt not be brave enough for this one...

If you are in Coronado and you are really low on cash, you can head down the strand to Imperial Beach and there's a little taco shop on the left side as you come into town called Los Panchos (there's another one in downtown but I don't like it). That one has fantastic mini tacos using fresh corn tortillas (as opposed to the fried crunchy kind) and great fish tacos (battered, not grilled). They also make a burrito out of them. Oh, and the best horchata i've ever tasted! I really like living 7 miles from the border. lol.

The only fish taco I've tried is from Taco Del Mar. Took me awhile to get up the nerve to try it, because it didn't sound very good but everyone raved about it. It's a batter-fried piece of fish in a mini tortilla with shredded cabbage, a tangy white sauce, and a squeeze of lime juice. (You can also get it with traditional tomato salsa, but I don't.) It's very yummy!

No idea if that is how they are typically made, but what the heck! Give it a try!

Another great place to go with the kids in San Diego is Trophies. It's located in the Hazzard Center in Mission Valley and offers a really nice menu and atmosphere with multiple big screen TVs. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy. San Diego is too much fun not too! :thumbsup2

Great. Now I want a fish taco. Does Fins have drive thru?

Yummmm...me too! No, unfortunately Fins doesn't have a drive-thru. :(

We love this eatery and the sad thing is that they closed down the restaurant in our neck of the woods. Gettting a couple of Fins combo meals was a regular Friday night take out for my DH and I. The only Fins restaurant left is off Interstate 5 in the La Jolla Village Square off Nobel Drive. Too far for Friday night take out now.

Oh yeah....here's another restaurant (fast food) recommendation. It's more of a SoCal tradition, but still quite yummy: "In-n-Out Burgers":

Can you tell that it's dinner time for me? Gotta get some grub now.

Edited to change the Interstate number to "5."
