San Diego Cruise port to LAX

Ok we are coming over from Australia in April and I'm not so sure on transport from the end of our cruise to LAX as we fly home that evening..
We are thinking of taking the Amtrak but we have read mixed reports on it. We will have all our months holiday luggage with us and it's 2 kids in tow also.. Would this be a good idea??? And how would we go about it.. I don't think it will take us to the airport so which would be the best stop to get off to catch a taxi...???
Or do you think it would be better to just get a company to drive us..??

You can walk from the port to Santa Fe Depot, it's about 2-3 blocks. The train takes about 3 hours to Union Station, without delays, you can check luggage. Then you can take the Fly Away bus to LAX which will take about an hour. Depending on the schedule you could have to wait for the train and bus. I wouldn't really recommend that in addition to needing to arrive 2 or more hours early for an international flight and then sitting through said flight.

In this case the best way may be to take an airport transfer and fly from SD to LAX. I'd do this through a travel agent and get them to link your reservations. That way you shouldn't have to pay luggage fees for the domestic leg.

The other option would be to do a one way car rental and drive. It'll take you about 3 hours, depending on traffic.

Thanks for the Info and reply SMD.. Great info. I look into the price of being driven and there is a company called Halfmoon limos which gave a quote under $300 ..have you heard of them?? I can't find any reviews so I'm just. Not sure

I used Saferide once to bring a client up from San Diego. We used them in LA and they were able to do it, so I didn't have any reason to price out other companies. If I recall it was $300, maybe $360 for a large SUV for 2 adults.
