San Diego Beach Help

Our family (DW, Me, DSons 8 & 6) will be in SD March 29-April 2. We'd like to visit a beach for a few hours one afternoon. We are staying at the Dana Inn in Mission Bay. I know very little about SD as we have only been there one other time in 2005. I'd appreciate some guidance about where to go for a beach and specifics about how to get there, where to park, what to bring, etc. Again, I really have little or no knowledge/experience with this. Your closest beach is Mission Beach, just head West on West Mission Bay Drive for 2 miles. Parking will be in a lot right after you take a left on Mission Blvd near Belmont Park (on your right).

There's a Boardwalk there, so plenty of places to eat.

I'd bring a swimsuit, towel and sunscreen - even if it is grey out you'll need sunscreen.

It's not our nicest beach but I spent much of my childhood here, and came out OK.

Further afield is La Jolla which you could reach easily by taking West Mission Bay Blvd and then taking a right on Mission Blvd and then a left on La Jolla Blvd when it splits. Lots of fun tide pools to explore (check tide calendars for low tide) as well as fun rocks to scramble on. Town of La Jolla is also nice.

Thanks for the information. That's really helpful and sounds great! I'm looking forward to exploring. And good to know about the tide calendars too. Being from Minnesota with 10,000 lakes, I didn't event think about the tides! LOL!

If you want to go to the best beach then I would recommend Coronado Island. It was Dr. Beachs best beach of 2012 for the whole US. It is just a short ride over the bridge to Coronado. http://www.drbeach.org/
