San Diego airport rental car companies

When I look at the San Diego airport website page on car rentals, it makes it seem as if all the car rental companies are away from the airport, and that you need to take a shuttle bus to get to them. My brother swears he rented a car right at the airport. Do any of you have any experience with this? We currently have a reservation through Enterprise, but I'm wondering about changing it. Our flight home leaves early in the am, and I'd hate to waste too much time getting from the rental car place to the airport...

Unfortunately that is true. While very close to the airport, the car rental lots are not AT the airport, and do require a short shuttle ride to get there. Then, when you return the car off at the lot, the company, whoever you choose, will have a shuttle that takes you to the airport.

I was afraid of that! Are any of the companies particularly convenient (or inconvenient) if we are trying to save time in the morning?

I don't have much experience, since I live in San Diego, so haven't ever had to rent a car here, but all of the car rental companies are basically on the same few blocks near the airport, all in a row. As far as getting ones that have convenient shuttles, I'd assume that the more common companies would have better schedules, but I would confirm with the company you're thinking of using prior to booking that they have a shuttle when you need it, since you said you have a very early flight. They might run less frequently in the late night/early morning hours.
