DH and I are going through our MUST DO list for the upcoming trip. He is expressing to eat in Mexico and we can't figure which dining location? He'd like to eat inside the pavillion for the ambiance of the volcano...but I heard the food isn't that good. SO, which would you choose and why? :goodvibes

We ate at San Angel Inn when we went, the other was still under construction. We all thought our meals were tasty, there were 6 of us, but HOT. We weren't sure why because it didn't look like they put anything on the food, the veggies were hot, the potatoes were hot...it was really odd. It was the second time my dad ate there and the rest of us would go back again. I believe there is a ride you can go on inside if you decide to eat in the other place. Then you would still be able to see the inside, which I thought was really pretty. Don't forget to try and find the hidden mickey when smoke comes from the volcano.

we have eaten at San Angel twice and dont care to ever again. There menu is very small and there wasnt one things thatour family of 5 ordered that was any good. We are looking forward to La Hacienda in just a few weeks!

We have never eaten at either place either but have ADRs for San Angel Inn for May because my DD7 requested Mexican for her B-day lunch. I really like the ambiance of inside the Pavilion so I am kind of excited about eating there, hopefully we could get a table right by the waterway. As for the food, our family really likes Mexican so hopefully there will be something on the menu for all of us, if not, we will know not to go there again.

I have eaten at both and much prefer La Hacienda over San Angel Inn. I like the ambiance at San Angel Inn but food is much better at La Hacienda. It was the best meal of our trip!!! The view of the lagoon is nice at La Hacienda too. :yay:

I had dinner at the San Angel Inn the day before Thanksgiving & it was very good. There were not a lot of "Americanized" Mexican dishes on the dinner menu (tacos, burritos) but there are more of those types of dishes at lunch. Don't know how spicy your DD likes her food PoohsFan1 so be careful with the chips & salsa they bring out - the salsa has a good kick to it! I had the Mahi-Mahi, & it was outstanding. Wasn't spicy but very flavorful - even the whie rice had a great flavor to it (it was't just plain white rice). Hubby had the steak soft tacos, which were also very good - & it was a generous portion (4 tacos). Wish they had given him some rice with that so he wouldn't be eating all of my rice tho. :goodvibes
His nephew ordered the chicken (Pollo a las Rajas) & INHALED it, so I didn't get a chance to sample it. Flan was a little heavy but good - & FYI the do sprinkle sliced almonds on top (not too many) so ask them to hold the nuts if you have allergy issues.
I also found a link with the menu - hope this helps.

I have never eaten at La Hacienda but I have to agree with some of the PP's that the San Angel Inn's food is too spicy and the menu is too small. The atmosphere is fabulous, though. I think we will have to try La Hacienda on our next trip.

We were very disappointed in our lunch at San Angel Inn in October and will not eat there again. The restaurant is beautiful, but the menu is small and the food was not good.

Is there a counter service dining in Mexico?

No counter service that I saw, but there is a counter service place (can't think of the name of it) opposite the entrace to Mexico. It's on the water with outside seating, & it's more "Americanized" Mexican (tacos, buritos).

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm still up in the air as far as where to eat. DH really wants the ambiance...would we have that at La Hacienda?
