Salon magazine talks about the Battle to Ban Birth Control

You are kidding...right???

Are you saying you would ban the use of Birth Control if you could? :surfweb: ...I don't really think that a choice for me should be made by others.

No, I meant I'm not alone in seeing the goal of banning birth control as the next step in the anti-abortion crusade in the U.S.

Many people on this board think I'm imagining this, that there's no threat to reproductive rights in this country. But there are people in state legislatures battling to take away women's rights in this country as fast as they can.

All consuming issue with you isnt' it? :rotfl2:

You don't think it's an important issue, or you feel the threat is imagined?

I think both issues - abortion and birth control - should not be decided by government, and the government should take whatever time and money they're wasting on these issues, and move it to something that does matter - crime, homeless people, education -> in OUR country, not everywhere else.

let me try to explain what people were saying before ONE MORE TIME...

do some groups have banning birth control on their agenda? yes. no doubt.

is this likely to happen any time soon (or ever)? no, i (and most of the people on the other thread) don't think so.

:duck: Ok then...

Since I live in Canada, I don't see that happening here as we don't do thing the same way as the US.

Our politics is not as controlled by special interest groups as yours seems to be...Thank GOD!!!

I agree that contraception could be under assault in the near future. In the 1950s, Connecticut banned birth control. The Supreme Court case that overturned that ban, Griswald v. Connecticut is the same case that recognized a Constitutional right to privacy. Subsequent rulings on the right to privacy as it has pertained to abortion and consensual adult sex has outraged social conservatives. There are many people in this country, usually Christian fundamentalists, who would love to overturn Griswald and privavcy rights.

Edit--During the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for John Roberts and Samuel Alito, the nominees were questioned about the Griswald case and both nominees said that they supported the Court's ruling. Clearly some Senators are aware of the radical right wing's desire to overturn Griswald and crush privacy rights.

Well, Galahad, and dadto1, thanks for your demeaning diagnosis.

I just thought the thread was to post interesting health articles. carry on.

Yes, I heard them both support Griswold. However, Alito hinted heavily when he was a government lawyer that he views birth control pills as just another form of abortion. So while we won't see things like condoms come under direct attack, hormonal birth control most likely will.

Probably so, but I don't see them achieving that goal.
