Safe family neighborhoods near Disney?

Yes, thanks! I know the Davenport area--we spent a winter in Deer Creek. We will be spending four months this coming winter in Polk City, at Mount Olive Shores North (a gated RV community where people own their lots--some houses, some bare lots). Are there other towns we should look at while we're there this winter? We prefer to look on our own at this stage and not involve a realtor. Thanks!

After years of talking about it, we are close to taking the plunge as well this year with hubby and two middle schoolers!! Just about ready to throw our house on the market :)

Everyone is on board...scoping out areas a little further north-- Oviedo, Winter Springs and Lake Mary as they are said to have excellent schools. Any local peeps have the ins / outs of these areas? Schools, safety and sense of community are our top 3 must-haves....

So i passed the interview! They want me to fly down in 2 weeks for a face to face interview and tto take an assessment test.

Congratulations!! How exciting!

Kermiebudge- We are in the process now.. House has been on the market for 2 weeks! I've read good things about those areas up north. Someone commented somewhere in this thread that Oviedo was going a little downhill for their taste. I've also read how it was named one of USA Today's top cities to raise a family in around Orlando? I've read only good things about Lake Mary and Winter Springs, including their school systems. I think it's one of those things that we can research until we are crazed. Everyone has an opinion. When I've had several people say the same thing about an area, that's when I know it must be true and go from there. We are planning a trip down soon to look around again. I cannot wait!

I'd love to know which town you think is the best to live in, in regards to good schools, safety, affordability, proximity to Disney(I know, but my kids are so excited about that), is pet friendly and you can get a 4 bedroom rental for under $1700 a month.
We had narrowed it down to Ocoee, Oviedo, Clermont, Winter Park, Winter Garden, Dr. Phillips and Windermere.

I think that Winter Park and Dr Phillips are probably out of that price range for a 4 bedroom home. I could be wrong. It's definitely do-able in Clermont or Winter Garden. I'm renting a 4-bedroom home in Clermont for under $1600.

somebody slap me - I love old houses and have been looking at the ones in historic Kissimmee. My impressions of Kissimmee are only from the Wal-Mart that is close to Disney - chaotic touristy is the nicest way I can put it. I'm thinking that downtown 'historic' Kissimmee based on the really cheap prices probably isn't the best area but I do love early 1900 houses.... we had a 1919 Victorian in CT and we spent a ton fixing it up but made it and then some back when we sold.

So I need a reality check ....and / or a good place to look for charming older homes that are closer to Disney (is there such an area?)

Congratulations!! How exciting!

Good luck to you as well!! I'm a researcher and the hunt for a new place to call home has been maddening to say the least! Meeting with a realtor when we get down there to get a feel for the towns. Just wish we knew people that live in that particular area to offer the low-down!

I have made a spreadsheet of all the areas we are looking at with distances to the different colleges for our daughter and to the parks.. LOL I also have been plugging in addresses and checking their proximities to registered sex offenders. I do NOT want to move next door to one. I know they're everywhere, but I don't want to be dumb either. You can do a search by city, zip or county.. I was shocked that there were 348 just in Kissimmee. I guess it's a bigger area than I thought it was. I also think the more transient an area is with vacationers, the more dangerous because then you have no control over who is coming and going.

We are looking for nice neighbors for our building, permanent residents like us or vacation families who would like a nice couple to keep an eye on their place until they get back to it. We are really hoping not to get a foreign investor who rents to rowdy people. This is our home... The fireworks and natural landscape view is fantastic, and we have over 2k sq ft. Any takes for Four Corners, with a brand new not even opened public charter school within walking distance, send me a message. I'm conducting interviews for our next door unit! lol.

I pm'd you!!!

Just to clarify, we don't have a unit ourselves to rent, but we are really hoping for great neighbors, private vacation residents or livable permanent residents etc.
