Has anyone visited recently and used an at-home Covid test every 48 hours in order to gain access to restaurants, etc? I am trying to find some concrete examples of the type of test used and how it all worked out in real world experience. All of the information I can find online is really vague and I'd like to be prepared for this aspect of our trip.

Every establishment has different rule so you should call every place you plan on visiting. That’s probably why you’re having a hard time finding concrete info. At my uncle’s restaurant you just need a picture of a test. <deleted> Some smaller establishments will only accept proof of vaccination and won’t accept any negative test at all.

As far as I know, the city/state has stopped distributing free tests. I was able to get some and we received the Quickvue test so I’d expect most places will accept that brand. Binax is also popular in Hawaii.

Also, it was difficult to find at home tests in stock for most of September and early October, so I would suggest bringing some from home. The stores have plenty of tests at the moment, but supply chain issues + tiny island in the middle of the ocean ... you just never know.

Thank you, this is really helpful information and exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. It would be so much easier if there was a uniform standard that everyone could operate under. I’m seriously thinking it may be too much hassle and I should just cancel the trip.

And who knows what wrench this new variant is going to throw into plans. I am worried about my trip in 35 days 😬

I think if you use the Binax and take a pic that includes your picture ID and the date written on a piece of paper, you’ll be fine. It’s the real mom and pop, hole in the wall places that are very strict.

Hawaii has a high vaccination rate and we learned a lot from delta. Crossing my fingers that the new variant won’t hit too bad. We got a new mayor this year and he is very resistant to shutting things down. Ige is allowing the counties to make their own Covid policies now, so I don‘t think you’ll see any major changes in the next 35 days 👍
