I just received word from my sister that Tristen died yesterday, January 14th - he was 8 years old. Today, the 15th is the second anniversary of my sister's husband's death so this is especially hard on her.
He was at home with his family and had a seizure. They took him to the hospital and put him on life support, but he had no brain wave activity so they removed him from life support. My sister's 11 year old grandson is his step-brother. So sad.
Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone on DIS who sent him postcards last March when I first found out about him being ill and any time since then. I am sure he loved getting all the mail from all over the US and worldwide. Thanks so much for taking the time to show a little kindness to a sick child you didn't even know.
I've listed my original request and update below in case anybody wanted to see what I'm talking about. My first request is no longer on here, but it was just describing what type of cancer Tristen had and how old he was, 7 at the time of diagnosis, and asking for postcards from all 50 states. We got responses from all 50 states plus many different countries. Thanks again.

For those of you who responded to my post a while back to send postcards to Tristen, I just want to thank you for your participation. I'm sure he was very excited to get the mail from all over the country.

My sister received an update on him this week. The tumor that is on his kidney has shrunk a bit from the chemo, but the main tumor in his leg has not changed. His family, including my sister's grandson (Tristen's step-brother) will be on their way to Florida to visit Universal Studios and WDW for a week at the end of this month, thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation!! I am glad that he will enjoy himself and that his family will be making some great memories with him.

:goodvibes Thank you to all who sent out postcards! I didn't know that asking for postcards on the DIS boards was considered solicitation, so I apologize if I broke the rules. But I do thank all those that participated and I am sure that he will be granted some smiles from the mail he receives. :lovestruc

Are there any organizations who send postcards to children who have a terminal illness? My sister's grandson's step-brother (sorry, long family tree) has been diagnosed with rhabomyelosarcoma. It has already spread to his kidney. He had surgery to remove the tumor on the kidney and started out patient chemo last week. He's seven years old and I thought if he could get a bunch of postcards from a whole bunch of people, it would be really neat.
Kids usually love to get mail anyway.

I too missed the original request and send my condolences to your family.

My nephew was diagnosed with stage 4 hodgkins lymphoma when he was 12 and we too solicited mail for him. The letters brightened his days and kept him going on his toughest days. I am sure the letters you all sent did the same for him. :grouphug:
