S/O - Do you see the point in owning a Rolex?

About 20 years ago DH really wanted the Rolex Submariner. We were in our early 20's and no way we could afford it. He's always loved that watch and I figured at some point, he'd start tasking about getting it. Last year his 6 year old Garmin was starting to die so we had to buy him a new one, $1200 for that. I then said something about him always wanting a Rolex and he must've dropped that idea. Yep, he said he couldn't give up his Garmin now. So whew, glad that is a closed conversation.

I just googled the current price on that watch. They have 3 and I don't know the difference between them. Cheapest is $9,200 and most expensive is $17k. In reality, while I wouldn't want to spend that much on a watch and value experiences more, I'm sure many folks are spending $9,200 on one trip to Disney. 8-)
Wife likes Submariners and purchased this one last month. She does a lot of water activity and this works well. She paid around $18000USD. I remember when Rolex watches were all the rage and my father and I were in a Savers thrift store during it's soft opening and we happened to spot a Rolex watch and so we decided to buy it for my mother and we bought it and my mom was curious to know more about it and so we researched info about Rolex watches and we found out that it was a fancy brand and the top watch Rolex is best known for is the Datejust. The final part of me and Dad's research we went to a jewelry store where a jeweler told us more about Rolex watches and we learned that some Rolex watches are collectible and my mom still has that watch in her collectible jewelry today. But back then when it came to watches Rolex and Fossil were the top watch brands and if you owned a Rolex watch it would mean a collector's item. My mother also has Seiko and Fossil watches too and she still has them today and one of the Fossil watches my mom owns is a Barbie watch

Rolex watches often go for five figure funds. A LOT of money. Me? I don't see the point. I'm not even drawn to their designs, in general. You can get far more attractive and unique time pieces that work fine for a pittance. And for all that money on a Rolex or Patek Philippe watch? You could live comfortably for a year AND go on holiday to Disney!

What is the point? Just to feel big?

[ETA] You can't even show it off on nights out - you'll get mugged!
I got a beautiful Rolex left for me in a loved ones will. I appreciated that, but I never wore it. I was a fulltime RN and only wore a certain watch at work and didn't like to wear one if not working.
So, I gave it to my daughter to keep in the family.

But I don't see a problem with someone having a Rolex. If someone wants one, then that's great. To each their own.
