You know when you check your luggage at the airport, and they always ask if you've packed your own luggage, or left it unattended? How come they don't have an issue with leaving your luggage basically abandoned all day at a resort, and then actually brought to the airport and checked in by a third party? I would think this would be a huge security violation. Anybody ever have any problem with it, or, alternatively, how safe does it make you feel to fly on the airlines that allow it?

Two answers:

First, the TSA discontinued the practice of having airlines ask the question several years ago.

Second, the Resort Airline Check-in service is operated by BAGS Inc. According to "About Us" at the BAGS Inc. website:

BAGS uses these sophisticated proven technologies to ensure accurate, safe and secure baggage check-in and transport to the airport as well as systematic and organized coordination with the TSA.

In other word, your luggage is not "abandoned all day at a resort," but is handled in a secure, TSA-approved fashion.

We were asked about packing our own bags/leaving them unattended in Oct when we flew with JetBlue! That was why I was kind of surprised that they are participating in the program.

Your explaination about Bags makes me feel better. I imagined everyone's bags in some room off the main lobby, where nefarious evil-doers could access them!

The TSA eliminated the requirement that airlines ask questions at check-in on August 29, 2002.

As the press release says, the questions were: "Has anyone unknown to you asked you to carry an item on this flight?" and "Have any of the items you are traveling with been out of your immediate control since the time you packed them?"

Now you can be concerned that JetBlue might be ignoring directives from the TSA!

If you really need to be re-assured, if you check your bags with the bellhop because your airline is not represented at the resort check stand --- you can after getting the bags back open each one, rummage a bit inside, then close it up again and you can board the ME bus and once again truthfully say the bags were not out of your control since you packed them.

As mentioned above, no one is going to ask so you won't have a golden opportunity to now truthfully answer ... dada dada
