My wife volunteers at a German Shepard Rescue.
She came across an exceptional German Shepard, one of many she got adopted.
Here's a note from the family that adopted Ryker:

"I had a full day of emotional experiences today. My wonderful husband passed away this morning. Ryker, my husband's constant companion, and I were by his side. When he took his last breath, Ryker jumped onto his bed and howled for 3-4 minutes. The hospice nurse was astonished. The moment was sad yet touching and memorable. I don’t find it surprising in the least.

What a blessing for that wife to have that dog there with her!

We’re a GSD family, currently have our 7th German Shepherd. He’s a rescue, and he’s come a long way from his previous life, which wasn’t the greatest. When DH comes home from work he starts barking in excitement when he sees him getting the mail and heading to the front door. That’s something new that he just started doing in the past month or so.

They are very sensitive dogs and I could definitely see one doing something like howling as their loved one passed. So glad he was there. It’s good for the dogs to know what happened. We had a hospice situation at home several years ago and our dog was there for the whole thing, too. We let that same dog see our other dog who’d passed at home being taken away by the crematory van. I think they understand the hormones and chemicals given off and all that, more than we know.
