Phil Mickelson has called on American fans to go easy on Colin Montgomerie at the Ryder Cup this weekend as upsetting him could make him play better.

Now if anyone remembers the scenes at Brookline in 1999 it wasn't very nice.

Lets hope everyone behaves and its a great game !!!!!

The Ryder Cup '99 was about as much fun as I've ever had watching golf. Whether it ticked off the Europeans or not, that celebration was a spontaneous eruption of joy from a bunch of guys usually about as gregarious as Dick Cheney on bingo night :teeth:

And sorry, but I don't have all that much sympathy for Mrs Doubtfire (that'd be Mr. Montgomery, to those of you who've never seen him). If he'd win occassionally, it'd shut them up.

But don't worry too much. With the downfall of Tiger, the casual fan has mostly turned elsewhere for their sporting entertainment. Between that and the beer ban, I don't think it will be much of a problem.

I hope the fans are under controll and don't harass any of the European players. I'm a huge Golf fan. I can't wait for the Ryder Cup to start. I'm curious who Hal Sutton will pair together for the matches. I think it will be a close match. Closer than what people think. The Europeans are serious competitors.
Have fun watching it. I will.

As a Ryder Cup fanatic, I can tell you that Sam Ryder (who personified golf etiquette) would have been horrified at the treatment the 17th green got. High heels!!!!

Colin Montgomerie was treated the worst of any golfer in any professional competition in the world. His Dad, just over heart surgery, had to walk off the course as he was so upset. His wife got spat on! Come on, surely you have to agree that was totally unacceptable.

Also, Colin Montgomerie may not have won a major, but he topped the European Order of Merit for 7 years running. Also, out of 28 Ryder Cup matches, he has won 15, halved 5 and only lost 8. Quite a team player

The atmosphere at the Belfry in 2002 was what the Ryder Cup spirit is supposed to be about. Let's hope Oakland Hills will be the same.

Can't wait for it to come to the K Club, not far from where I live, in 2006!

Holding it right outside of Detroit might not have been a wise move. :o :p :o

I hope everyone behaves and the matches are good. :) :)

Well, of COURSE that is, but a little verbal abuse is good for the professional athlete's ego :teeth:

And yes, I well know that Monty has won quite a few times...in Europe. Sorry, but that doesn't impress this here Amurcan all that much :) Seriously, it just isn't impressive when you look at the comparison between the European tour and the PGA of America. That, combined with his -zero- wins stateside combined with his -zero- wins in majors just isn't going to get you a lot of respect. (At least, not as a top player in the world).

I agree with you for the most part especially where Monty has not even won a tournament here in the USA (not to mention a Major) BUT Monty is one of the best in a match play situation. I'm sure you agree with that. He was a good Captains pick in my opinion.
Also I'm sure the European fans are no angels either.

Well....the term "hooligan" comes to mind, and we ain't talkin' Redskins fans :teeth:

Yes, Monty is certainly a good pick for this type of format. He always seems to play well in the Ryder Cup. Personally, I actually prefer the Ryder Cup to most majors (my heart is still in Augusta, though). I LOVE the format and "team play" atmosphere that you just don't get anywhere else in golf.

"Hooligans"...yeah British Soccer fans come to my mind when I hear that term. Talk about obnoxious fans.

Yeah, I love the Ryder Cup too but too bad it's only played every 2 years. My favorite tournament is the Masters.

I doubt it would happen but wouldn't it be neat if Sutton paired together Woods and Mickelson? Fat chance right?

Hey, you never know...Tiger has traditionally played pretty poorly in these things, so maybe pairing him with Phil isn't as weird as it might seem. Lefty has been pretty solid (if memory serves) so maybe that would inspire Tiger to play a little better.

Lord knows SOMETHING should :teeth:

Well, granted Montgomerie is only at 62nd in the World rankings at the moment, but he has been up at No 3 in the past, which I thought was pretty good going without getting all the cash that comes with a major :) , and he was getting that horrible treatment then. Do you think that now he's down on his luck the Amurcans might be nicer to him ;)

(Also, I must apologise for my earlier error, Colin has won 16 Ryder Cup matches, not 15, and lost 7, not 8.)

So, bearing in mind that Montgomerie plays mostly in Europe, like most of the European team, are you suggesting that Ireland's very own Padraig Harrington, currently 8th in the World rankings, is not worthy of much respect because he hasn't won a major?

And yes, I'd love to see Woods & Mickelson play together.

Love this tournament!!

Until you can win a tournament HERE, stateside, I don't think that you really have any credibility when claiming to be the number 3 golfer "in the world", regardless of where the rankings come from. If Monty had played here all the time, would he have even come close to achieving the level of success he did on the European tour ? Maybe, but I seriously doubt it. Just oo much competition on the PGA from week to week.

As for Harrington, I'd say he's one of the top golfers, but then, he's won tournaments here before, and played well most of the time. Winning majors isn't the only measuring stick, just a very good one when comparing players from different tours.

I didn't know he'd won in the US! What did he win?

You may (or may not ;) ) be right that Montgomerie wouldn't have had the same level of success in the US, but given that the prizemoney in the US is generally a lot more substantial, and that money won is what dictates rankings, I reckon he'd have done just as well, if not better. Ironically, he decided to stay in Europe for family reasons, but the wife dumped him earlier this year. The divorce was granted last week on the basis of his unreasonable behaviour, i.e. he was addicted to golf!

I love watching the Ryder Cup as well even though I am Canadian. Great format, great tension. It is one of the few golfing events where you need to stay watching. It makes for great tv.

Good article on Monty or as the article calls him "Monty-Lite" since he lost so much weight.

I do believe Harrington did win an event here in 2003. The World Target Challenge or something like that. I'm not sure if it was an official PGA Tour event or not.

Yes, nice article. Hopefully the good form is here to stay!

Can't find details of Padraig winning in the US, I looked at his details on officialworldgolfranking.com but it only shows wins in Europe and Asia. I certainly don't recall him winning in America, I'm sure it would have been news here!

Anyhow, I hope Monty, Harrington and the rest are all in peak form over the next few days :teeth:

No, I say get in their grill. ESPECIALLY Monty. Hoot, holler, and heckle. All that whining they did the last time is more than enough reason to do it again. Detroit, I'm expecting nothing less.
Make us proud!

Nothing wrong with hooting and hollering providing that the players are given the chance to make their shots without TOO much distraction - but can you keep the players off the green until the Europeans have putted please;)

The European golf fans at the Belfry were complemented by the US team for their sportsmanship.

P.S Not all British soccer fans are hooligans:D

Just wondering what you think he did to deserve this?

Show your countrymen up if you must. Luckily your type is in the minority - most Americans have a sense of decency.
