RVing to Ft. Wilderness

I asked this question on another board and was referred here. My wife and I will be pulling our 30' TT down to Ft. Wilderness the first week in Dec. Although we've driven many times, it will be our first time with the trailer. Does anyone have a preferred route across from I-95. We usually come in on I-4, but the traffic coming through Orlando can get pretty fast and furious (and unforgiving) making lane changes pretty challenging. Thanks for any thoughts and suggestions. The toll roads have been suggested and I'm giving those some thought although it looks like it might add significant time to the trip.

We run in a 36' Class A and tow a car. I always take I-4. It can get busy at times in the downtown Orlando area, but I just take it easy.

Pick a middle lane and drive at the speed you're comfortable with. If other drivers are impatient they can always go around you!

We live outside of Hilton Head, SC and always take I-95 to I-4. As pp said, take your time and let everyone go around you. You should be fine with that route.

we are so excited to be in Orlando that we just assume those "fast and furious drivers" are just as excited to get to Disney;)

We have a 34' Class A and just find a comfortable lane with a comfortable speed and roll on. Stay calm, anticipate the "idiots"....you'll be fine. Plus, do it once and you'll be a pro. AND.....we'll be there too the 1st week in December:cool1::cool1::banana::banana:

Every year we do I95 to I4, take the exit for Magic Kingdom and stay to the right. When you get to the parking gates you want the second to last right lane, tell them Ft. Wilderness and they will wave you through....follow the signs from there.

Sounds like you folks manouver a lot more RV than I do, so it's reassuring to hear from people who have been there/done that. Thanks for the help. Guess we'll stick with I-4 and try to time it around mid morning.

BTW it sounds like we're going to have a quality crowd down the first week of December. See you there. :)

While I use my RV a lot, its at the same location. I might drive to other destinations 2-3 times a year. I4 is not bad but you just need to have patience. I am not trying to win any races getting to disney and a large RV (38') towing a 15' open trailer is no short vehicle. I try to stay in the right hand lane and if I really hit a slow vehicle then I wait for a good opening and pass then get back in the right lane.

I think the key is what time and day you plan to be going down I4 and you might need to change up your schedule to avoid the worst of the traffic.

Thanks, jbrostek, we should be hitting Orlando on Tuesday between 10 and 11 am. I know it won't be quiet, but maybe it won't be a madhouse.

You should be fine that time of day . . . just remember, slow and steady wins the race!

On a tuesday at 10-11, you should be fine. The only area I really find that tests my nerves is about mile marker 89-down to 75. Otherwise, the road really is smoot sailing.

I would take 408 over to the Turnpike and the Western Beltway. Very little traffic and you come in from the west side of Disney

I must be missing it, but how does 408 drop you on the west side of disney when it ends at the toll road?

Attending a convention at Dolphin on Resort and travelling with Pet & wife in an Airstream Interstate EXT (Mercedes Sprinter Van conversion).

I'll need to travel each day back and forth to Dolphin hotel for the convention.

Plan to board the dog during the day (I understand they have kennel on site).

My question is; is it smart to drive the Van to the hotel or mess with transportation? Cab? Bus? Boat? What is best way? Looks to be about a 5 mile walk so that is out :)

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

The kennel is no longer on site. It is about a mile or so.

First thing I'd check to see if the Dolphin or The Fort will provide transport since it's a convention.

If you have to bus it, a bus to DTD or Epcot then a bus to Dolphin. Gonna take a while.

I'm assuming the Van is the camper. So I'd say a cab is your quickest easiest way.

If you leave the van on a site in a pet loop you can leave the dog in the van during the day. I would agree that a cab would be the quickest option although it's possible to reach the Dolphin with park transport. It will take a while though.
