I would like to make run for a cause. So many people in my life have been affected by cancer, so I would like to run for the American Cancer Society.

Is there anything official I need to do?

TIA

I think it's wonderful that you want to do that, we ran the half this year for the A - T Children's Project and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. They will have a list of charities that participate in the Disney Marathons on the Marathon home page, it's not there yet because I just looked. You might even contact the American Cancer Society and ask directly if they are going to participate. I know Team in Training for the Leukemia Society is the largest charity that participates. Good luck !!

Link for TNT--you just find your appropriate chapter, send an e-mail and then you will be on a list to be contacted when they start sign ups for Disney--usually about July-August. You may even call the chapter office directly just to find out what their rough estimates were for fundraising last year.

From the FAQ..these are charities from 2005. I am a slacker and never updated for subsequent years, so they may have changed from different years.

I don't think the Cancer Society and I know the Breast Cancer groups do not participate...they have the fundraising walks that they organize on their own. ACS might have become a recent participant, but I am not sure.

My coach for TNT has this motto that I am about to slaughter--that a rising tide helps to float all the boats---so when you can help one cancer group--you are in essence possibly helping others. So something to consider! In 2006 (a year ago--when I participated for the 2nd time)--I stayed as an observer at the end of the Half..the last walker in was running for the Stroke group....Remaining at the finish to cheer her on was nothing but TNT coaches and mentors (About 20-30 of us). So consider your training and fundraising support when you sign up for a group. Some groups leave you hanging while others provide much assistance with it all.

But the best fundraising you can do is for an organization that speaks to your heart.

If you end up looking outside of a cancer charity, please do consider the A-T Children's Project that Angie mentioned!

I did the Disneyland Half for them & my Mom did the WDW half under them. They are a wonderful group! They also have a much lower min. fundraising requirement than some of the other charities (which was a big concern for me). If I weren't so incredibly concerned about fundraising minimums, I would walk/run for them every single race I could.

I was suppose to train with TNT this year, but wasn't able. The coaches are great....they would call or drop a note asking how things were going and how my step son was. I plan on walking the full in 08' and will go with TNT, it's a wonderful organization. There are so many wonderful groups to sponsor, it's a matter of which one speaks to your heart. Keep us posted!
