Does anyone know if Disney has restrictions regarding running their races while pregnant? I just found out we're expecting, and I'll be 6 months along for the Princess 1/2. I'll obviously discuss it with my Dr, but does Disney require a medical release or anything if I am able to run?

I know some of our local races require documentation that your Dr feels it is safe for you to run, so that's why I'm asking.

I will probably end up walking the majority of it since I *just* got into my 1/2 training and I've never ran more than a 5k before. But, I really want to finish this race and earn my medal. Badly.

Nothing special needed. You sign a waiver, its up to you if you run or not.
I know one of the ladies who makes running skirts ran alot of races while pregnant.

Congratulations!!!!!

I'll ask Cryssi to respond to your post. She just completed the Disneyland Half. Made the whole WISH and ROTE teams proud!!!

Yes, Jeff is right! Crystal is the person to ask! She is amazing and ran the Disneyland Half Marathon earlier this month in her 3rd trimester! :worship:

I met up with a TNT Coach at Chicago Distance Classic who was a pregnant runner turned walker doing that half. She had the ok of her doc and family to walk it. She walked faster than me and looked quite comfortable doing so. I think if things are going fine and doc and family are good with it, as well as your pace being able to handle it you'd manage. At six months things are definitely growing. The main thing will be your pace. I don't think you want to be pushing too hard at this stage. If you can be comfortable at a pace to get you over the finish line with maximum time then probably it would work.

What is your pace ability now?

Hi! I did just complete the DL 1/2 at 34 weeks pregnant (about 7.5 mo). It wasn't as difficult as it could've been, because the weather really cooperated. I wouldn't exactly say that I "ran" it, though...LOL. I wogged the first 10.5 miles, averaging between 14-15:30 min/mile. This included a potty stop around mile 8, too. When I hit 10.5, it was really starting to heat up...looking at the garmin, I realized that I could walk the rest of the way at around an 18 min/mile and still finish under 3:30, so I slowed it down. I think I walked miles 12 and 13 at about 17:30! Jogged the last .1 and crossed the finish line with my arms up and a smile on my face. Chip time 3:26.

To put it into perspective, last year's DL 1/2 (my very first race), I finished in 2:29. My goal this year, however, was just to finish and get my C2C medal! I was already registered before I got pregnant, so I had to give it a try.

Disney does not require a dr. note or anything. In fact, they didn't say anything to me at all. I was also worried about that, but it was ok.

Here's my advice:

1. Tell your doctor from the very beginning what you are planning to do. If you are already in training, and have been running for awhile, he/she should tell you to continue what you are doing, just tone down the intensity and watch your heart rate. Keep reminding your doctor about the upcoming race. Since you will only be 6 months, it should be a lot easier than 7.5. I'm sure that if I had done DL at 6 months, I would have been a lot faster...3:15 or maybe even 3:00.

2. Build slowly. Since you haven't done a distance race before, I'm a little concerned. I had 2 halfs and a full under my belt before this year's DL 1/2. I knew that my body knew the distance, therefore wasn't worried too much about training for distance. I wogged 10 miles 3 weeks before the race. That was my longest distance this time. If you are diligent with your training (distance, not speed), you will probably be ok.

3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Take water and powerade at every water stop. You will probably need a potty stop or two. Fuel regularly, every 45 min. Be prepared to quit if at any point you feel faint, dizzy, contracting, etc. I had to keep telling my doctor that Disney has a lot of medical tents and I would stop if I had to.

Anyway, I just realized that this is more info than you probably cared to get from me... :headache: LOL Short answer, no, Disney doesn't require anything special from your dr. As long as you keep running and everything looks good at your appointments, you should do great! :)

good luck!

Crystal, thank you SO much for that info!! You have no idea how much that helped.

I need to discuss it all with my Dr. I am really nervous about the whole thing, especially since I can't get myself to train right now thanks to all-day morning sickness. I tried going for a walk yesterday and lost my breakfast. :(

I'm supposed to run with my SIL, and she paid for our team registration, so I would feel so horrible backing out and loosing that money. I know she wouldn't want to walk the race, either.

As for my pace, I run/walk (I'm doing Gallloway) a 13 minute mile right now. I ran my full 5k in 12 minute mile pace. So, I'm a pretty slow runner, which is fine by me. SIL was hoping I could get up to a 1min walk/3min run pace with her. Right now, I do a 1:1.

I was lucky and didn't have any morning sickness (I know, you can hate, it's ok. Lol). Try to train through it best you can, and then when you get past it, you will be fine. Feel free to PM me anytime, too and I will see if I can help at all?

I did the last Minnie 15k at around 20 weeks. My doctor told me to be able to keep talking! He didn't worry too much about my heartrate as long as I could pass the "chatting test." (Caveat- I found out I was pregnant right after finishing the Goofy, so I had a pretty good base and a doctor who already thought I was crazy!).

For what it's worth, I felt horrible in my first trimester- not truly sick, but always queasy. I cut back on some of my runs (or walks). I think I focused on getting in my long runs, even if they took forever. I felt much better right about when the first trimester ended. My last race was a very slow 5k at about 7 months- I still felt good (if BIG) but it was July and I couldn't take the temperature anymore!

Good luck!
