Running and allergies?

Hi all! I'm a newbie runner who did C25K over the winter on the TM and am now transitioning to the pavement. I did a 2.5mi run last night on a multi-purpose trail out in a wooded-park type area and I noticed when I was finished that the inside of my nose felt really, really warm. I breathe in through my nose, out through my mouth, and I am guessing some of it had to do with allergies since I am allergic to various types of pollen and grass.

My question is, does anyone have any remedies to this or does it just naturally go away after time? Thanks WISHers!!

I don't get the warm feeling I just get really stuffy. However, I breathe in and out through my mouth when I run so maybe that's the difference. It's worse when my seasonal allergies are acting up. I have my clean tissue pocket and my dirty tissue pocket. :sad2: Been doing it for over 10 yrs and just learned to live w/ it.

If I take allergy medicine I feel dehydrated and that causes its own problems for running so I usually avoid it.

I am grass, dust and weeds, DH is trees and cats, DD15 is just about everything. When I'm stuffy or runny, it actually improves during a run, then goes right back afterward. :confused3

Try not to take any decongestants like Sudafed before a run. It has the side effect of increasing heart rate and can cause your heart rate to really crank up while running. Don't ask how I know this :rolleyes1

Nasal steroids like Nasonex are a great option. I use them only seasonally when my symptoms get bad, usually only a couple weeks here and there throughout the year.

Like Mel, I have found the nasal steroids (I use Flonase) have the best effect. Failing that, using an over the counter, saline-based nasal spray before and after the run seems to work pretty decently as well.

Other than that, I have just gotten used to being stuffy when running. Hope it gets better for you! I grew up near Kent, OH - southeast of you, so I understand what you are going through.

DS is majorly allergic to all things outdoors. He also runs and tells me that he just "sucks it up." He somehow manages to struggle through it w/o taking anything and I don't know how since he works outdoors for his employment too.

I am mold/dust allergic and notice I do my best in the cold/cooler weather and as the season picks up I just slow down and accept that it is the way.

I do breath in nose exhale mouth and don't take anything to get me thorugh. I'm lucky enough to not be totally incapacitated.

WISHing you get yours figured out somehow.
