Yikes! I just signed myself up for the runDisney Virtual Challenge.

I haven't run in YEARS! And quite honestly, I'm overweight. I'll be using the training program on runDisney over the next few weeks to get prepared. I'm really looking forward to how my time changes between the 1st and the 3rd 5k as I progress through the summer.

Are you doing the challenge? What's your top tip for avoiding injury when training as a de-conditioned former athlete?

Big thing is listen to your body and don't try to increase milage too much each week. A steady and slowly increasing plan is best.

yes, both of us are doing the challenge! While my daughter is happy just completing, I do it differently in that I refuse to hang the medal as being "earned" unless my time beat the previous.

As for my top tip-- stretch, stretch, stretch!

I’m doing the challenge also! I’m mainly a walker, but I’m going to see if I can beat my times each race as a source of motivation to keep adding jogging segments to my workouts. It’s the perfect motivation for me this summer. I don’t have any training tips because I have only done 2 5’ks. I just wanted to say hi! :flower1:

I'm still undecided on the challenge. It's been an expensive few months for virtual races and I hold out some hope that I might actually get to do a live race out here in California (maybe) in September.

Tip for avoiding injury: Listen to your body and do not fear building up to a faster pace.

I’m also going to do the Lion King virtual challenge as a first timer. I’ve been walking 2.3 miles once or twice a week with no problem, so getting up to a 5K distance shouldn’t be too hard on me. Now if the website would just cooperate...(thanks Disney IT)

When are you all scheduling your runs, this summer?

I'm spacing them out like so:

1) Mid-June as a baseline. I haven't jogged that much in the last few years. I'm doing the runDisney 5k training program now. When that finishes, I'll time my first virtual race.

2) Mid-July - to try and meet or beat my 1st race.

3) Mid-August - to try and best my own time.
