If we don't go with conceirge how much money will we need to put down and when is the cut off for being able to move it to a new cruise if need be?

Deposit is 20%. Non-concierge is fully refundable until the PIF date, which depends on the length of cruise -- 90 days prior to embarkation for shorter (up to 5 nights) cruises, or 120 days for longer (7+ nights).

Looks like you have until 90 days prior to move a Concierge deposit (this doesn’t show any difference based on cruise length).

If you are unhappy with a cruise at normal prices - how are you going to feel if you have paid double or more?

Did you have issues on the Wonder that could have been mitigated by being in Concierge? Specifically, things that needed help from a Concierge - or access to a private lounge for most of the cruise?

Could it be time to go to another line for their concierge class - one with a separate dining room? Or maybe a Celebrity cruise? Or Holland America?

Food for thought.

Actually, no we didn't have anything having conceirge would have made better =)
Except maybe the food situation by having access to the lounge.

I'm not unhappy with the price of a normal cruise - but my finances aren't always as steady as I'd like in that we aren't always ready for unexpected financial drains and it sets us up to need to kick the can down the road. I know with some lines if you don't pay by a certain point you can't even move your deposit - it's just gone. Sounds like Disney has a much better policy for someone in our situation.

I've thought about making that switch, but part of me can't help but wonder if I can be miserable on a Disney cruise - how on earth would I be happy on a not Disney cruise? I think in many ways it's going to be a lot more a situation of if the Fantasy doesn't work out - we'll just stop cruising and switch to land based trips.

Very sound thinking. Whichever direction you take, I hope you can find some fun travel experiences in your future.

And thanks for the post on what went wrong - we had followed along and then wondered about you when suddenly you weren’t posting. It’s like reading a book and turning to the last chapter and there’s nothing there.

Just to clarify… If you make a deposit and do not make final payment when due, you DO lose your deposit. And DCL penalties kick-in after the PIF dates as noted above. That applies to cancelling for a refund or changing dates.
