I know you can do this because I have done it before. I think there are some rules about how many days before you arrive you can add dining? Does anyone know?

You can't add dining to room-only ressie. The only way this can be done is if you rented points from a DVC member of if you are a DVC member yourself staying on points.

To add dining, you must purchase at least a 1 day base ticket, thus making it a package. Only DVC members or their guests can add dining without purchasing some form of ticket.

This is not true unless it's a very recent change. It can be done because I have done it. What I am not sure of is the number of days before arrival you need to add it to your room only ressie.

Would also like to know if this is true? Maybe you could call WDW and find out?

I have a room only and was not told that I had to add tickets so I cannot confirm that part.

Just to clarify, I understand if adding the dining package I must purchase at least 1 day tickets, as well. I did that last time...

You cannot add dining to a room only reservation. You would have to rebook a package through WD Travel Company that also includes tickets. You would then cancel your room only reservation and have that deposit refunded as money cannot be transferred from a room only to a package,

with the ticket purchase that technically makes it a package, not room only reservation. You can make changes up to 45 days in advance without a penalty..but if you are adding $$ to your stay, ie the dining plan, they may not charge for it since your cost is going up not down.

Room only is just that -- Room only.
As stated already someone wanting the DDP added would be changing their room only res to a WDTC package, that also includes buying MYW tickets.
This would need to be done not less than 3 days prior to check-in. (3 days/72 hours is the cut off)

You can't add dining to a room only reservation. Everyone that is telling you this is correct. You would have to buy at least a one day base theme park ticket in order to add the dining.

I am not doing a good job of explaining myself. I am looking to book with a "room only" code in Sept. for a Dec. vacation. Then, if I need to re-book through WDW Travel Co. at a later date to include tickets and dining--that's fine. They have let me keep my discounted room in the past. That's what I am looking to do here; book with a discount code--then at some point later add dining and tickets to it while keeping the discount. I have my reasons for wanting to do this and it has to do with dates and times that we will have excess funds available to pay off such a trip. Someone above mentioned something about being able to add dining at least three days before arrival. That is the kind of information I am looking for. I just need to have it confirmed for accuracy. I booked a package the other day with a discount and it must be paid in full (for our family of eight) by Hallowe'en. DH says we will not be able to pay in full until a later date so he doesn't want me to keep that ressie. If I book with a room only code (if they are released in late September) the timing will be much better for us--but I still want the tickets and dining. I actually did this earlier this year. I booked with a 40% off code for the room and about a month later decided to add dining and tickets. It took some doing but was able to keep my room discount when reworking the package. I just need to know the latest time I can switch from a room only to a dining/tickets package. When I did it before there were no time constraints. This time there are...

Ok, when CRO releases discounted room codes, there's one that's room only and one that includes dining.

For example, they may have code ABC listed as a 40% room only discount. They will also have code EFG which will offer the same 40% room discount plus dining and tickets. I believe you can add dining 3-5 days before arrival.

Is there a way to guarantee that you’ll be able to switch from one code to another? What happens if they have filled up the allotted discounted package rooms when you try to switch?

If you’re going at a busy time, they may not have rooms available with dining code.

That is correct. There may not be any package rooms available with a discount if you want too long.

There is usually 3 codes.

Room only
Package only
Package with dining

The last time I called inquiring about a pkg and said I wasn't ready to book (just "browsing") the CM tried to talk me into making a room only ressie because he said that I could do so with only a nights deposit. He made a point of saying that I could call anytime before the "72 hours mark" to convert my room only to a package. I didn't do it - but it did interest me. Of course he didn't say anything about a discount - but I am curious to know if you can convert a discounted room to a package and keep the discount????

No you can't keep the room discount on a package. There would have to be package rooms available.
