I've doing some reading on the Restaurants at WDW. Using passporters guide and the unofficial guide. And there seems to be a place (50s prime time) that the servers, how can i put this, are encouraged to treat you like "family" . What does this mean. Are they rude and tell you what to do? If so, is it worth going to?

Yes, it's true - and it's a fun place to eat. If the patrons don't get that it's done in fun, the servers change their tactics pretty quickly.

Prime time is fun!! We enjoyed it - the food's pretty good except, in my opinion, the pepper stuffed with veggie rata-puhtooey.

I wouldn't call it rude... there is a lot of "don't forget to eat your vegetables" and standing in the corner for punishment etc. but it is all done with good humor. The more you act up, the more they act up.

That being said, you don't go there just for the food (it is just OK), you go for the atmosphere!

If you go to the bathroom, make sure to wash your hands, and you darn well better remember what color the soap was!:rotfl2:

As others have said, it is not "rude" at all, but in good fun! Do you consider your family rude when they talk to you at dinner? It is things like take your elbows off the table, or no baseball caps at the table, or eat your vegtables etc. If you find those things rude, then I guess they would be rude for you. It is just a big game, that everyone understands. It is actually great fun if you are into it.

We ate there once a few years ago. I didn't remember it being rude. The Mom would just make sure that you ate all your veggies or take your elbow off the tables. She was usually really funny about it. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. The only reason why we haven't gone back is that we didn't really like the food.

It was hilarious! I loved our server Cousin Mikey, an amazing server if there was ever one.

It's all in good fun and you can tell that it's tongue in cheek.

In all my visits to 50's, I have never experienced a rude waiter/waitress. I've had "mom" tell me that I need to set my place setting, but never in a rude way. Also, I usually will mention to the cm when I check in that I'm not really into that stuff and have always had very respectful cm's.

They're not "rude" at all...they are just "enforcing" the 1950's values of propriety, with a little bit of diner'esque attitude...plus the chocolocate & peanut butter banana milkshake is worth the trip all by itself...

I been to something very similar to this by Detroit. I was a lot of fun to watch. I was only about 12 at the time and unsure what to think about it. Could be interesting to take the family to when we get there. Will i need to make reservations?

It is a fun place & yes you should make reservations or ADR's in WDW speak.

We had fun there. Just like having your mom hanging over you telling you what to do.

It is possible though, to get a server who's not really into it and doesn't do anything. Like we got once, which was fine by us since I'm shy.

We had a waiter who was fantastic. He chased after my DD when we were leaving and in his hand was a bag with someone else's leftovers - he was calling out to "stop that girl!! she eats like a bird! We have to fatten her up!" which was hilarious!! The people who belonged to the left overs got them back, so don't think we glommed them!:lmao:

Its one of our favorite places - even though my dh and one of my dd's are very shy we have always had a great experience.

Your servers are your "cousins, aunt, etc" and your in "mom's" kitchen. The kids had to set the table - hats off and good manners. Lots of fun but we have always had servers that were great about how far to go with each table and or person at the table. My outgoing dd had to wear her napkin tucked into her chin along with a few other things. My shy dd was made to feel welcome and special without embarrasment.

We have been next to tables who had to sing songs for not eating vegies and other antics. You could tell they were into it and enjoying it.

We think its lots of fun

kids normally love to see their parents "reprimanded" too :lmao: (like others have said, little things, like "no dessert until you eat you vegtables", "elbows off the table", etc).
it can be a lot of fun, depending upon your server (we went many years ago, & the server "served". nothing more, nothing less.we were soooo jealous of the other tables, looking longingly at their servers;) .....even tried to egg ours on, but no :sad1: i finally went back last year, & we had one of the fun ones ~ definately memorable  ).
fyi, many of them do adjust their humor based on the responses they receive. if you don't want to "play", they'll tone it down a notch.
