Does anyone know if we can use our Rogers Cell phone in the area?

Thanks! :thumbsup2

It will, but don't use it unless you have to. They charged me $718 for my trip in Nov/Dec. I added a "long distance plan" before i left and asked the customer service rep if it it would work for me in the US. The only problem is that she didn't know what she was talking about, they only have plans for calls from Canada. I was fixing problems at work while down there and used 280 minutes for $439. Also I texted back and forth using 517 messages for $249. The long distance plan that I added and increased text plan cost me an additional $30, all for nothing!

I hope this helps, I wish I would have known before I left.

I did call Rogers once I received my bill and after pleading my case for 2 hours and 4 people later they only offered a $100 credit of goodwill. Ya right!!!!

Needless to say I'm NOT renewing my contract when it's due.

I have a Rogers cell phone and a daughter living in Ft. Lauderdale, so I'm down there a lot. I never turn my phone off and use it just the way I would at home. Keep in mind that I don't like using the phone at the best of times, so my calls are never overly long. I have never had charges over $100 yet.

There is a plan available for use in the US for a set number of minutes at a flat rate, however it is for the calendar month. This has never worked out for us.

I wasn't planning on renewing mine either when it comes up. Mostly because of the lack of service - It's brutal.

That being said, I called them about my situation and they told me I basically have 2 options. Option one: regular fees $.95 local calling (within the US then), $1.70 p/minute to make calls to Canada, $1.25 to receive calls OR I can buy US roaming minutes package. It would cost me $40 dollars for 60 minutes!! :scared1:

The ONLY reason we will be using our cell phones is if one of us gets lost or we're not going to be ontime to meet. Any calls to Canada will be made from our Villa as they have free international calling.

I always leave the cell phone at home and get a prepaid phone card. Before our first trip I phoned Rogers to ask them about charges to Canada from Florida and was told that since Rogers have no towers there, you are charges top dollar for any phone calls.

There are a couple of things to remember any time you're talking to someone in a Rogers store. Most of them are franchises and what they'll tell you may or may not be the corporate policy. I found that out the hard way. If I remember correctly, the monthly fee was about $100 give or take a few dollars - unfortunately I can't remember how many minutes you get for that. In any rate, we never found our charges to be out of line. JMO.

Ugh, glad this came up again. Our contract is finally nearing an end, so it's good to know it's not just us with service/contract problems.

On our first trip we paid $40 for two quick calls. We tried to get a plan that would work but couldn't find one. Instead we bought two T-mobile phones +airtime for about $60 US. The little phones are cute, maybe Aliant will be able to activate them for our new account with THEM! ;) THey ended up costing more than we'd hoped (we spent about another $20 on more airtime), but it was great to be able to use them without hassle. Also calls home to Canada didn't cost any more than local calls.

We cancelled for this exact reason-one quick phone call home $45! and then it kept cutting out.

Went with Telus and have been very happy with them (2 years now).
They are a much nicer company to deal with.

I wonder how much Roger would charge you for text messaging. Ive been thinking about using that to communicate while we're in the park.

Texting runs around 50 cents/text. That goes up based on the size of the text.
